John Zimmers, 2007 Superintendent of the Year
Life is full of seminal moments; those forks in the road when the direction one takes influence forever the outcomes of life. Those moments include marriage, the birth of children, career choices.
For John Zimmers, superintendent of Oakmont Country Club, one of those critical career moments came when he was living in his hometown of Tyrone, Pa. Fresh out of high school, Zimmers asked the local landscaper for whom he had been working for two years to bump his minimum-wage pay by 25 cents per hour. When the company’s owner said that an extra quarter an hour was not in the budget Zimmers knew it was time to move on. A job search began immediately, and soon after he answered a help-wanted ad posted by the superintendent of a Delaware golf course.
“That was his defining moment,” Zimmers’ wife, Tracey, said of the request for a raise. “Two weeks later he was moving.”
The move took Zimmers to Wilmington (Del.) Country Club and later to Rutgers University and launched a career of working for and with some of the biggest names in the greenkeeping industry.
The award, sponsored by Club Car, is presented annually to a superintendent nominated by his or her peers, employer, club members or others who recognized an exemplary ability or effort to provide outstanding golfing conditions with whatever means available and in the face of whatever calamities or conditions encountered.
