Rounds fall 3 percent in June

After much good news early in the year, nationwide rounds played were down more than 3 percent in June, dragging year-to-date participation figures down with it, according to a recent report.

Rounds were down by 16 percent in Hawaii compared with June 2008, followed by Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico and the region of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, all off by 10 percent compared with the same month last year.

For the year, rounds play were relatively flat (up 0.2 percent) compared with the first six months of 2008, according to the National Golf Rounds Played Report, which is a collaborative effort of Golf Datatech, National Golf Foundation, PGA of America and National Golf Course Owners Association. Rounds played had been up by nearly 2 percent through May.

According to the report, daily fee facilities performed slightly better than private clubs, but still experienced a decrease in participation. Play was off by nearly 3 percent at public-access facilities compared with a 5 percent drop off at private clubs.

Leading the way in May was Iowa, where play was up by 14 percent, followed by Wisconsin (7 percent), Oklahoma (3 percent) and California (2 percent).
