Webinar series offers information on paspalum

by John Reitman

A recent seminar on paspalum provided a group of superintendents with the opportunity to learn more about the varieties currently available for use on golf courses in the United States, their attributes, up-to-date research projects, grow-in and management practices and disease control.

For those who were not able to attend the event, held Sept. 9 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., five of the six programs presented that day have been recorded and posted on TurfNet as archived TurfNet University Webinars.

The program, entitled Perspectives on Paspalum, comprised Cultivars and Research by J. Bryan Unruh, Ph.D., of the University of Florida; Paspalum in Saline Environments by Stewart Bennett, CGCS, of SaltScape Solutions; Rivers Edge Golf Club No-Til Greens Conversion by superintendent John Shaver of Rivers Edge Golf Club; Pine Lakes Country Club Restoration by Randy Allen, CGCS, and Alan Jarvis, CGCS; and PGR’s and Paspalum, by Dennis Shepard, Ph.D., of Syngenta.

Unruh is one of the leading research authorities on paspalum, while Bennett has been growing the turf on golf courses for almost 20 years. Shaver recently completed a no-til conversion from bentgrass to paspalum at Rivers Edge in Shalotte, N.C., and the team of Allen and Jarvis recently renovated historic Pine Lakes with paspalum wall to wall. Syngenta's Shepard has been working with plant growth regulators for several years.

The program also offers a couple of unique opportunities for visitors to TurfNet.com. Each of the five archived Webinars, sponsored by Environmental Turf, is offered free of charge to everyone. Registration for other TurfNet University Webinars is free for members and $25 for non-members.
