
Educational event taps into technology
Superintendents in California and surrounding areas will be able to learn some of the latest research and management information on a variety of topics at this year’s Northern California Golf Course Superintendents Association Institute. Topics will include maximizing efficiency through various technologies as well as reducing water consumption on golf courses.
The event is scheduled for Oct. 19-20 at The Course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, Calif. The institute includes a trade show and golf and is presented jointly by the Nor Cal GCSA Chapter and the University of California Cooperative Extension.
Speakers include Erik Gakstatter of Discovery Management Group, Aaron Johnsen of Turf Intelligence LLC, Jason Bass of Stratapoint, Bernd Leinauer, Ph.D., of New Mexico State University, and Jason Hill, Ph.D., of The Toro Co.
Gakstatter, an expert on GPS technology, will speak on how superintendents can maximize their management efforts through GPS mapping and surveying. Gakstatter has consulted on dozens of golf course GPS mapping project.
Johnsen is the founder of Turf Intelligence, a Minnesota-based agronomic consulting service that specializes in using measurement technology to monitor factors such as soil moisture, salinity and temperature to optimize soil conditions.
An arborist and president of Stratapoint, Bass will cover a variety of topics, including managing more with less, producing a living map (including turf, trees, irrigation, chemical usage, etc.) and interdepartmental communications as it relates to compliance issues.
Leinauer is a professor and extension specialist in the plant sciences department at New Mexico State. He will present findings of his research on use of soil moisture and salinity sensors. He also will discuss how superintendents can use these tools to reduce water consumption.
Hill, advanced engineering manager with Toro, will provide an overview of the company’s Turf Guard system and how superintendents can use it to improve soil and turf conditions and minimize water use.
The event also will include a trade show on Oct. 19 and golf the following day.
