Kentucky's Potter to receive Green Section Award

As an urban entomologist in Kentucky, Dan Potter, Ph.D., has a wide array of research field sites in which to study the effects of insect pests and how best to control them. Such sites include golf courses, sports turf and residential lawns, as well as gardens, nurseries, parks, cemeteries, orchards, vineyards and some of the most hallowed ground throughout the Bluegrass State – horse farms.

For his work in helping golf course superintendents throughout Kentucky and elsewhere find effective and sustainable solutions to their pest problems, Potter was named the 2010 USGA Green Section Award winner.

The award is presented annually to individuals who “exemplify outstanding contribution and dedication to the game of golf through their work with turfgrass.” Such persons can be involved in any phase of work with turfgrass, including research, extension and turf management.

For more than 30 years, Potter has worked to help superintendents manage insects on golf course turf. Much of his research has been funded by the USGA. He and his students spend much of their time studying the biology of white grubs and caterpillars to develop ways to control the pests with a minimal amount of synthetic pesticides. Their research includes exploring alternative management programs, including conserving beneficial predatory insects, developing safer insecticides based on natural plant substances and identifying management practices, such as watering routines and height of cut. He and his students help educate turf management professionals throughout Kentucky and elsewhere through outreach and extension.

“Our research has helped golf course superintendents and other landscape professionals work with natural buffers to manage insects on turfgrass,” Potter said. “We try to solve insect problems in ways that protect the environment and are safe and cost-effective for people.”

Potter also has received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Urban Entomology, the Distinguished Achievement Award in Horticultural Entomology, the Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching from the Entomological Society of America, as well as Research, Teaching and Service to Graduate Students awards from the University of Kentucky.

During his tenure at UK, Potter has advised 34 graduate students and has been on the graduate committee of more than 60 others. His students have received numerous recognitions, including the ESA J.H. Comstock Graduate Student Award, the ESA Award for Leadership in Applied Entomology, and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Watson Fellowship. Nine of his former students are faculty members at universities nationwide, while others are employed as extension agents, consultants, and industry scientists, as well in state and federal agencies.
