    Met GCSA honors Oatis, Niven

David Oatis of the USGA Green Section and superintendent Scott Niven recently received the two highest honors bestowed by The Metropolitan Golf Course Superintendents Association.

Oatis, director of the Green Section’s Northeast Region, received the Met’s John Reid Lifetime Achievement Award. Niven of the The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn., was presented with the association’s Sherwood A. Moore Award.

The John Reid Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annual to an individual who, through a continuing lifetime commitment, promotes the science and art of golf course management and the professional image of the golf course superintendent. The award’s namesake is credited with helping bring golf to the United States in the 19th century.

Oatis has been a USGA agronomist for 10 USGA national championships, has authored many articles on turf management issues and is credited with making more than 3,000 course visits in 20 states and Canada.

The Sherwood A. Moore Award is given annually to a superintendent who advances the professional image, status and reputation of the golf course superintendent. Moore served as president of the Met GCSA, GCSA of New Jersey and GCSAAA.

This year’s winner, Niven has been superintendent at The Stanwich Club for 26 years and is a former Met GCSA president (1988-89). He also has chaired the GCSAA research committee and served on various other national committees.

Both men received their awards Jan. 20 during the Met GCSA annual winter seminar luncheon held at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y.
