The USGA Green Section will conduct a regional conference March 9 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
The half-day seminar is open to golf course superintendents and their assistants as well as owners, operators, managers, professionals and those from allied associations. Cost is $35 per person and a jacket is required.
Speakers will include Stan Zontek, Darin Bevard and Keith Happ of the USGA Green Section Mid Atlantic Region; research engineer Matt Pringle, Ph.D.
The Rhode Island Golf Course Superintendents Association recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to students at colleges and universities throughout New England.
Chris Clavet, who attends the University of Rhode Island, was the recipient of the C. Richard Skogley Memorial Scholarship, while Kathleen Reynolds of the St Joseph School of Nursing in Nashua, N.H., was awarded the Ryan Reynolds Legacy Scholarship. Both received $1,500 scholarship awards.
Also receiving $1,500 scholarships were Emily Carlone, Craig Richard and Leslie Sykes, all of the University of Rhode Island; Melinda Lawlor of Worcester (Mass.) State College; Thomas Lund of Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn.; and Kathryn Wallace of the University of Connecticut.
SUNY-Delhi puts NYSYTA funds to use for lab equipment
The State University of New York – Delhi Department of Golf and Plant Sciences recently was able to buy six microscopes for its students thanks in part to a grant from the New York State Turfgrass Association.
The grant, which totaled $6,800, allowed the department to buy four classroom microscopes, one digital stereomicroscope and a digital compound microscope. They will be used in a variety of classes, including turfgrass management, plant pathology, botany and entomology.
Toro donates to assist earthquake victims in Haiti
In response to the recent earthquake disaster in Haiti, The Toro Co. announced that it would donate $10,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund to assist with relief efforts there.
The company also announced that it would extend its commitment to relief efforts for earthquake victims in Haiti by matching all employee contributions made by through March 1.
