Former golf course superintendent Steve Tyler is among six people recently elected to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.
An employee of Standard Golf Co. for the past 29 years, Tyler, 62, has been involved in the state’s turf industry since crewing on a golf course as a teen.
Joining Tyler in this year’s class are former golf professionals Mike Bender, Jack Hall, Jim Hasley, Bob McKee and Lonnie Nielsen. The 2010 Hall of Fame class will be inducted at a time and place to be determined later this month, according to the Iowa Golf Association.
A member of the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association since 1967, Tyler built Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, and was hired as the city’s golf course superintendent when the course opened in 1972. He was a superintendent for 13 years before leaving the profession for a position with Cedar Falls-based Standard Golf. He was a member of the local chapter’s board of directors from 1976 to 1979 and served as its president in 1978. He is a charter member of the Iowa Turfgrass Institute and was its first president in 1980. He also sat on the board until 1995.
Other honors Tyler has received over the years include the Iowa GCSA Distinguished Service Award in 1985 and the Iowa Turfgrass Institute Meritorious Service Award in 2009. The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame is comprised of 49 amateur players, golf and club professionals, journalists, superintendents and industry benefactors.
Tyler has worked for Cedar Falls-based Standard Golf since 1981, serving as regional sales manager as well as the company’s new product director.
