Steve Mason, Sky Valley Georgia

Steve Mason, TurfNet member, is the golf course superintendent of Sky Valley Country Club, a stunningly beautiful "hidden gem" of a golf course, tucked into the mountains of Georgia at nearly 3500 feet.

Unlike many courses in the Appalachians, Sky Valley was skillfully positioned in the gentlest part of the valley and lacks the claustrophobic feel of a layout that was narrowly carved into the side of a mountain with dynamite.  The pastoral view of the valley is magnificent and alluring.  (It reminds me of my childhood in Bavaria.)

Sky Valley is also the highest city in the state and once hosted the only ski mountain in Georgia.

The following short film documents how Steve's family history is tightly connected to Sky Valley.  Steve even reveals his secret for presenting optimum conditions with a tight budget and minimal crew on a high-maintenance course.

Very nice piece Randy and so refreshing to hear from supers that are out of the main stream and their love for a beautiful piece of land and are reducing inputs. Once again you find these hidden gems and give us all pause in what we are about.

Oh, I noticed the credits at the end. I thought you did all of this up to now by yourself, kinda like what happens at Rivermont. Not!

Thanks, Mark.

While it's easy to run a film crew when you have multiple personalities, it doesn't work on a golf course.

Specially weekend prep.

Great recognition for a well deserved Superintendent. The place always looks great.

That video should be a recruitment tool for our industry. I feel Steve's back pain daily and think often I am getting too old for all this physical labor stuff. Then I watch that video and want to be his assistant. That is some kind of power in editing/filming. Great job.

Thanks for the compliment, Matt.

As for the asst. slot, I already tried for that but I got the impression that Steve would be more comfortable with the bear than me.
