Position Summary: Assistant-in-Training

The Assistant-in-Training will oversee the majority of daily operations under the guidance of the Assistant Superintendents and the Director of Golf Course Maintenance. Key responsibilities include:

  • Crew Management: Schedule, train, supervise, and motivate a 26-person crew.
  • Irrigation System Maintenance: Operate, adjust, and repair the irrigation system.
  • Moisture Management: Oversee moisture management of the golf course, with a focus on putting greens.
  • Course Inspection: Inspect the course daily to evaluate conditions and recommend improvements.
  • Fertilizer and Pesticide Application: Oversee the application of fertilizers and pesticides, maintaining accurate records.
  • Goal Setting: Establish short-term and long-term goals in collaboration with the Director of Golf Course Maintenance.
  • Safety Program Implementation: Work closely with the Director of Golf Course Maintenance to implement the department’s safety program.
  • Communication: Maintain communication with Golf Professionals regarding on-course activities.
  • Coordination with Contractors: Assist in coordinating work with outside contractors.
  • Additional Duties: Conduct other appropriate tasks as assigned by the Director of Golf Course Maintenance.

Educational Requirements

A degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant/soil science, or a related field is preferred, but all experienced candidates will be considered.

Experience Requirements

Preferably 3-5 years of golf course maintenance experience.

  • Preferably 3-5 years of golf course maintenance experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to direct, motivate, and evaluate team members. Spanish speaking would be helpful.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to create timely solutions in a dynamic work environment.
  • Desire to grow as a turf grass manager to advance in the turf management industry.
  • Ability to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment typical of this position, including frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain a California pesticide applicator's license within 6 months of hire date.
  • Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license.
