Assistant Superintendent

Menlo Country Club, located in Woodside, California is looking for an experienced and dedicated individual to join their golf course maintenance team as an Assistant Superintendent.  

The chosen individual will be responsible for year-round, day-to-day on-site operation and oversight  of golf course maintenance and associated administrative functions. He or she will be responsible for  staffing and development of regular maintenance staff including: foreman, greens  keepers, equipment operators, and landscape maintenance staff. 

The Assistant Superintendent works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and will report directly to the Director of Agronomy, Chris Eckstrom. Menlo Country Club and the Director have a history of mentoring and developing assistants for future advancement opportunities.

Club Highlights:

  • Staff: 21 Full-time and 1 seasonal
  • Annual Rounds: 24,000
  • Typical work schedule: In-season - 50-55 hours per week, Out of season - 40-45 hours per week
  • Grass types: Greens - Tyee 007 Bentgrass, Tees & Fairways - Santa Ana Hybrid Bermuda, and Native Roughs
  • Equipment: Toro 
  • Irrigation system: Toro Lynx 
  • Future projects: On-site water treatment facility/skim plant - Early 2025, and a new maintenance facility - feasibility study in progress
  • Future events: The Big Match - annual match-play event featuring UC Berkeley and Stanford University Men's and Women's teams.

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF POSITION:

  • Become acclimated with the team members and the programs at Menlo Country Club
  • Learn the course irrigation practices and programming
  • Create relationships with the current team and staff
  • Work with the Superintendent to schedule and run the crew on a daily basis.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND APTITUDE:

Personnel Functions:

  • Interview, hire, train, terminate, motivate and effectively direct the work of staff in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • Conduct 90-day and annual Performance Development Reviews of Greens Keepers emphasizing our commitment to inspire leadership and excellence.
  • Recommend raises and/or promotions for Greens Keepers 
  • Oversee the completion of daily and weekly work schedules for Golf Course Maintenance department 
  • Manages and upholds Club Mission and Objectives as detailed in Golf Maintenance Standards of Operation manual  
  • Maintain "working" and "employee" files. 
  • Establish a sense of purpose among a diverse work group by encouraging day-to day commitment to our mission and operating values.  
  • Responsible for ongoing improvements to training programs relating to fertilizer applications, pesticide applications, general safety, and equipment operations. 

Golf Course Responsibilities:

  • Develop, nurture and sustain collaborative working relationships with all management and staff. 
  • Encourage ongoing communication with the Director of Agronomy regarding events,  course maintenance and special course projects. 
  • Possess a working knowledge of cool and warm season grasses. 
  • Fertilizer applications, including; proper calculations, calibration of equipment, and  record keeping.  
  • Pesticide applications, including; proper calculations, calibration of equipment, and  record keeping. 
  • Ability to identify and treat common turf grass pests, pathogens and deficiencies 
  • Ability to operate a wide range of equipment (tractors, mowers, spray equipment, rollers,  and small equipment). 
  • Irrigation management, spot watering, central computer scheduling, repairs, troubleshooting, and project coordination. 
  • Working knowledge of pump station maintenance. 
  • Construction project management. 
  • Work with mechanics to continue to improve maintenance schedules and systems. 
  • Oversee daily on-course bathroom janitorial activities to include stocking of soap, toilet  paper and hand towels. 
  • Oversee ongoing building maintenance of golf course buildings; including fire sheds, on course bathrooms, pump station, administrative offices, and maintenance barn  

Fiscal Responsibilities:

  • Regularly monitor and report on progress of goals with the team. 
  • Purchasing of golf course supplies. Run all purchases by the Director of Agronomy before purchasing.  
  • Maintain vendor contact and develop a healthy working relationship. 

Planning and Teamwork:

  • Foster a commitment to short and long-term strategic planning. 
  • Reinforce commitment to comprehensive and systematic planning throughout club operations, supporting a pro-active style of management focusing on the achievement of  targeted objectives. 
  • Submit Weekly Objectives by Monday morning of every week. 
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings with the Director of Agronomy and maintenance team. 
  • Cultivate an integrated approach involving high performance multi-skilled, multi functional, empowered, self-directed work teams organized around end-to-end  workflows.  
  • Drive goals for weekly safety, compliance, and training meetings

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • $90,000 - $95,000, depending on experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5+ years of golf course maintenance experience
  • Certificate, 2-year or 4-year degree 
  • Ability to obtain a California Pesticide License within 120 days of employment is required
