Built in 2018 and designed by noted course architect, Ken Kavanaugh, the Club’s golf practice facility includes a 350-yard-long hitting area with three 100-yard-wide tee boxes and a 7,900-square-foot chipping area and putting green.

The Telluride Golf Club is a private facility, open to members of the Telluride Ski & Golf Club, their guests, and guests staying at the Peaks Resort & Spa. The Course is open from Memorial Day weekend to early October.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Title: Golf Course Superintendent

Reports to: General Manager

Supervises: Assistant Superintendent, Irrigation Specialist, Chemical Tech, Mechanic + Seasonal team

Position Description: The Golf Course Superintendent is expected to provide Members and Resort Guests with course and practice areas offering excellent playing conditions and exceptional turf management. He/she directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, cart paths, and surrounding areas. The position is responsible for the supervision of the golf course maintenance staff including but not limited to training, discipline, and scheduling.

Course Access: Golf Carts ONLY, no walking

Number of Staff Managed: 20+ at high season

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Irrigation:

  • Maintenance of golf course irrigation system. Including irrigation heads, valves, mainlines, laterals, and pump station.

  • Ensure proper completion of all course remodeling, layout changes, and special projects.

  • Training of employees to efficiently repair irrigation heads, valves, mainlines, and laterals.

  • Monitoring and maintaining the pump station to ensure proper operation.

  • Monitoring of golf course for irrigation-related problems as well as moisture levels to determine night watering schedule.

  • Provide recommendations and/or complete watering schedule based upon course conditions.

  • Monitors and maintains central control system and satellites to ensure proper operation.

  • Monitors and maintains ditches that provide the golf course with irrigation water.

  • Recognize the need for, and supervise the installation of, additional golf course irrigation.

  • Maintain positive relations with Club Members.

  • Support safe work habits and a safe working environment at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provide proper and efficient training for all employees of the golf course maintenance staff.

  • Motivate golf course maintenance staff to provide the best possible playing conditions.

  • Educate golf course maintenance staff about SDS records and proper safety procedures within the maintenance facility as well as on the course.

  • Oversee effective execution of day-to-day golf course maintenance practices, and provide suggestions to achieve the most efficient and highest quality product possible.

  • Assist in maintaining the quality and cleanliness of the golf course maintenance facility and its surroundings.

  • Manage equipment, materials, and resources effectively.

  • Provide suggestions and/or complete daily work schedules for up to 30 staff members.

  • Discipline golf course maintenance staff based on professional interpretation.

  • Provide accurate information regarding course situations to the pro shop and Membership office.

  • Performs evaluation of golf course maintenance staff members.

  • Oversees departmental recruiting, associate onboarding, coaching, disciplinary, and termination of employment. 

  • Establish records regarding employee performance and work completed on golf course, including all irrigation repairs. 

 

Experience Requirements

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Must possess thorough working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course greens, tees, fairways, and rough. This also includes the proper operation of equipment needed to maintain these areas.

  • Must become familiar with characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and pesticides including application techniques.

  • Must become familiar with the irrigation system and all of its components, including repair and maintenance.

  • Must be willing to learn new techniques in completing various tasks and/or ability to modify techniques in case of unforeseen circumstances.

  • Must be able to manage people of various personalities.

  • Must be able to communicate thoughts, ideas, and instructions (both written and oral) to golf course maintenance staff as well as upper management.

  • Must possess a college degree in turf grass management or related field.

  • Proficient computer skills are beneficial.

  • Previous experience in managing or supervising employees.

Language Skills: 

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills:                   

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:                   

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to make a decision.

Computer Skills:                   

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
