Golf Course Superintendent

Position Summary

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall maintenance of the golf course and grounds. This includes, but is not limited to, course set-up, agronomy, staff supervision, budgeting, and irrigation. Additionally, there will be long-term goals and projects set by the Director of Operations that will be expected to be met. The Golf Course Superintendent will work closely with the Director of Operations to ensure the golf course is maintained at the highest level and is ready for play. They will also be responsible for ensuring that the golf course is in compliance with all environmental regulations. This position will work closely with Scott Wackowski.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall management and maintenance of the golf course and grounds.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, course set-up, agronomy, staff supervision, budgeting, and irrigation.
  • Additionally, there will be long-term goals and projects set by the DOP that will be expected to be met.
  • The Golf Course Superintendent will work closely with the DOP to ensure the golf course is maintained at the highest level and is ready for play.
  • They will also be responsible for ensuring that the golf course is in compliance with all environmental regulations.
  • Maintain the golf course and driving range in playing condition up to the DOP standards.
  • Schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates all personnel assigned to department.
  • Prepare annual operating budget for the golf course and submit to the DOP for approval.
  • Takes corrective action as necessary to help ensure that budget goals are met.
  • Develop long-range plans for the improvement of the golf course and its facilities.
  • Select and purchase all chemicals, fertilizers, and other supplies needed to maintain the golf course.
  • Apply chemicals and fertilizers to the golf course according to established schedules and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.
  • Oversees repairs of broken water lines or valves and may perform necessary repairs in an emergency.
  • Operate and maintain all equipment used on the golf course.
  • Inspect the golf course daily and react to any unforeseen issues as they arise.
  • Supervises operation of the equipment repair shop & maintains all equipment based off of their owner’s manual.
  • Ensures proper landscaping for property outside of golf course including the clubhouse and surrounding areas.
  • Meet with the DOP on a regular basis to discuss problems and recommend solutions.
  • Determines when course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues.
  • Be aware of new developments in turfgrass management and share information with staff and others as appropriate.
  • Understand the rules of golf and be up-to-date on federal, state and local laws on golf course operations.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the DOP.

Experience Requirements

·         Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing all phases of golf course management and turf culture.

·         Planning, scheduling, and managing a large staff (digital Job boards a plus)

·         Certified and/or licensed in pesticide usage.

·         Participating knowledge of the game of golf.

·         Thorough knowledge of the construction establishment, and maintenance practices employed on golf course putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers; planting and culture of turf grasses used on golf courses; the planting, cultivating, and pruning of ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; pest control methods and  materials; drainage methods; watering practices and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls.

·         Must possess the ability to train, motivate, and effectively direct, through the assistant golf course superintendent the work of employees in a safe, efficient manner; procure, maintain an inventory of, and supervise the proper use of chemicals, pesticides, parts, materials, and supplies, prepare clear reports; execute the authorized expenditures; keep needed records relating to payrolls, personnel, operations, equipment, chemicals, and safety; and maintain effective employee and public relations.

·         Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
