Job purpose

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Director of Agronomy / Golf Course Superintendent. Under the Director of Agronomy / Superintendent's supervision, the Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in the day-to-day operations of the golf course to ensure it is maintained to the highest standards. This role involves assisting with the planning, implementation, and supervision of all agronomic practices, including turfgrass management, irrigation, pest control, and staff management. The Assistant Superintendent also helps in ensuring that the course meets the expectations of members and guests, while working to maintain a safe and efficient work environment for the Agronomy team. The Assistant Superintendent may serve in the Superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit weekly employee schedules and bi-weekly payroll summaries to the Director of Agronomy / Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Adjust actual schedules to ensure efficient use of employees.
  • Assists the Superintendent in the planning and scheduling of daily, weekly and monthly work and project activities.
  • Performs recruitment, hiring, and monitoring of the Golf maintenance work crew.
  • Conduct employee training programs and perform individual or group sessions for new team members.
  • Assist in the administration of safety programs, while monitoring the team’s adherence to safety procedures.
  • Assist in the development of the golf course capital projects and the maintenance budget, while operating within the established financial boundaries.
  • Directs and participates in the maintenance of all areas of the golf course as required by the Superintendent.
  • Maintain the employee uniform policy, ensuring team members wear clean uniforms and name tags.
  • Assist in the organization, security and cleanliness of the maintenance building, inventory and equipment.
  • Monitors and adjusts the irrigation system daily. Completes the daily irrigation sheet and notes any repairs in the Irrigation Notebook.
  • Assists in the maintenance of written records including chemical purchases and application logs, irrigation notebooks, machine repair file and weather data. Monitor and ensure adherence to safety regulations pertaining to storage and application of chemicals
  • Schedules, inspects, evaluates and maintains the golf course, clubhouse, tennis center, and common areas on a daily basis.
  • Coordinates golf and maintenance activities with the golf professional in an attempt to maximize golf course play without disturbing maintenance projects.
  • Promotes owner, management, member and guest satisfaction by professionally, courteously and diplomatically communicating activities, goals, plans, while receiving input in the same manner.

Experience Requirements

Qualifications include:

  • Energetic, positive “can do” attitude with a desire to learn.
  • Good organizational and verbal skills. Ability to use logical and rational thinking to resolve issues. Ability to perform basic mathematical skills, monitors and develops subordinates, visually monitor the operation areas, write and read member communication.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • State of Florida Restricted Pesticide Applicator’s License or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
