Seasonal Intern
3 to 6 month internship positions are available year round. Housing provided (furnished, on property cottage ). Scholarship Fund.
Secession is a walking only, 18 hole, links style golf course designed by Bruce Devlin. It is surrounded by tidal marshland and is located in the “low country” on Gibbs Island; just across the bridge from Beaufort, South Carolina. It is also located with-in one hours travel time from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia.
Champion bermudagrass greens, 419 bermudagrass fairways and tees, and the course is overseeded with ryegrass from November through April (excluding the greens).
Educational Requirements
Educational Requirements:
Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate of a 2-4 year accredited Turfgrass Management program.
Experience Requirements
Prefer a minimum of 1 season of golf course maintenance or construction experience.
Special Requirements
Our internship expectations would include, but never limited to: mowing of various playing surfaces, hand watering, course set up, involvement with small project crews, irrigation assistance, mechanical assistance, involved with cultural practices like aerification, drill and fill, verticutting, graden, fraze mowing, sprigging, sodding, heavy equipment operation, calibration of spray equipment and rotary spreaders, and pesticide/fertilizer application assistance. Annual, significant drainage projects are currently ongoing.
We want this candidate to make this a valuable learning experience. A positive attitude is the most important requirement.

Secession has a tuition scholarship fund (LeVeen-Roach) for current employees, family members of employees, and college students from the area. Qualifying interns that apply for the scholarship would have an "inside track" on being awarded some of these funds for school.
We allow the interns to help dictate what they want to learn and do on a daily basis. Interns will be involved with the planning/scheduling of the daily and weekly tasks for the entire staff. Interns are encouraged to ask questions and spend one on one time with the superintendent, assistants, equipment manager, and irrigation technician.
The interns will get whatever THEY want out of the internship. We will give them as much knowledge and experiences as they ask for.
