Assistant Superintendent

East Hampton Golf Club located in East Hampton, New York is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to work closely alongside the Golf Course Superintendent to strategize, coordinate, and implement a successful maintenance program.

The selected individual will be heavily involved in leading daily operations, and executing agronomic programs. Our expectation is the position will be a springboard toward progressing individuals into a Golf Course Superintendent role but could also result in a top-tier stable role on the East End of Long Island.

Situated on what was once farmland owned by a local East Hampton family, the 18 hole layout was designed by world renowned golf course architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The course offers a challenging and contrasting mix of holes played on inland links and parkland style natural contours. The greens offer challenging undulations surrounded by deep faced bunkers and beautiful sandy waste areas. It has been called by many visiting golf professionals and writers a “hidden gem”!

Golf Course Superintendent DJ Warner is a UMass graduate and has been in the turf industry since 2007. Now heading into his 6th season as a Golf Course Superintendent, he made career stops at Atlantic Golf Club, Maidstone Club, and Gardiner's Bay Country Club. He is a lifelong outdoorsman and BBQ enthusiast. 

Club highlights:

  • Schedule - 55 hours per week in season. 40 - 45 hours offseason
  • Staff size - Currently 20 employees and expanding. The majority of "seasonal" staff has 6 weeks off in February/March
  • Equipment type - Primarily Toro equipment through a leasing program
  • Irrigation system - Toro Irrigation Lynx 8.2 software
  • New irrigation system installation during Fall of 2026
  • Designed by Coore & Crenshaw, opened for play in 2000

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF POSITION:

  • Establish comfort and knowledge of the staff and property, which will lead to strong constructive conversations on future maintenance strategies and improvement.
  • Minor in-house renovations, and planned long and short-term course improvements.
  • Focus on growing conditions, playing conditions, and improving daily member experience.
  • Become comfortable and confident with executing daily tasks on the golf course ranging from mowing practices, chemical/fertilizer applications, irrigation services and repair, as well as course setup
  • Progressive responsibilities in leadership with the ability to schedule, coach, and train employees in various golf course maintenance tasks.

  • Proficiency in daily course operations, following a progressive path of responsibilities and skill mastery.
  • Know-how and experience managing cool-season turf on sandy sites with strong water management skills.
  • Comfortable working with various new technologies to optimize efficiencies. 
  • Must be self-motivated, reliable, and willing to take oral and written directions.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Task-oriented with high standards of quality and accuracy.
  • Formal and sincere communicator.
  • Strong follow-through on established procedures and policies.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate, degree, or substantial experience in Turfgrass Management
  • Strong technical skills and progressive responsibilities
  • Must obtain NY pesticide license within 90 days

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • $85,000 - $95,000 depending on experience
  • Single-room shared housing with other upper management staff

Educational Requirements

  • A certificate degree or substantial experience in Turfgrass Management
  • Must obtain NY pesticide license within 90-days
