Seasonal Intern
2025 White Bear Yacht Club Internship
The grounds maintenance department at the White Bear Yacht Club is looking for student interns for the 2025 season!
On the shores of White Bear Lake, twenty miles northeast of St. Paul, nestles one of the best but least well-known classical golf courses in the USA.
The White Bear Yacht Club dates back to 1889 and according to club records, William Watson added a 9-hole golf course to the club's recreational portfolio in 1912. Three years later, with input from legendary architect Donald Ross, 9 more holes were added and the routing adjusted.
The golf course recently finished a large renovation/irrigation and drainage upgrade that wrapped up in October.
Writing in The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, renowned golf course architect Tom Doak commented as follows: “[My] favorite course in the Twin Cities, White Bear Yacht Club is one of the last hidden gems in America – a great course that hardly anyone mentions. Likely part of the reason for its anonymity is that from the big par-4 1st hole to the blind tee shot on the 18th, it is a walk on the wild side, with fairway undulations that would require a small craft advisory, and greens that would make Perry Maxwell blush.”
Interns partaking in a summer internship will be treated as assistant superintendents and exposed to all facets of golf course maintenance. From chemical and fertilizer calibrations and applications, irrigation troubleshooting, tournament setup, an insight into budget setup and execution, and anything else the student wishes to partake.
An hourly wage that includes a top-notch housing setup just a block away from the lake, lunches, uniforms, and playing privileges are all included.
Candidates are asked to email their resume and cover letter to jkalina@wbyc.com.
If any prospective students would like to learn more about the opportunity before applying, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I am passionate about helping the next generation of turf professionals achieve their goals. I have hired six assistants in my eight years as a superintendent - the first four are all superintendents now (three of them at top-100 courses!) and the last two hires both work for me here at WBYC. Interns that have completed the program are introduced to further opportunities to advance their careers wherever they might want to go.
