Assistant Superintendent
Founded in 1916, Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club is located in Tampa’s most prestigious residential neighborhood and is the Tampa Bay area’s most prestigious private club. The club features an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts, swimming, a fitness center, and clubhouse for member entertaining, dining and banquets. Our main focus is providing our members and their guests with outstanding facilities and the highest standard of service.
The Assistant Superintendent works under the superintendent's direction and is responsible for all aspects of golf course operation and maintenance, including turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, staff supervision, member relations, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance with regulatory issues.
- Supervises a crew of approximately twenty (20) crewmembers, providing general supervision, direction, and assistance to groundskeepers, equipment operators, and laborers. Oversees the completion of assignments by crewmembers; assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, special projects, work standards, and efficient machine operation.
- Oversees the adequate care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and wetlands on the facility grounds; the preparation of soil plant beds, the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning, and trimming of trees and shrubs.
- Enforces the safe working conditions of all job assignments; ensures the proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment and is responsible for instructing staff on proper equipment use and work methods.
- Constantly monitors the turfgrass system and reports problems and conditions to the Superintendent.
- Records daily staff activities, disciplinary issues, weather conditions, and any unique cultural practices
- Ensures proper use, cleanliness, and security of maintenance facilities and equipment.
- Responsible for safe storage of fertilizers and pesticides. Maintains chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations.
- Applies pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers at appropriate times to maintain excellent conditions on the golf course in accordance with product recommendations and adhering to all safety standards.
- Inspect the golf course to determine any pesticide, herbicide, or fertilizer needs and communicate with supervisors to implement these needs.
- Possesses advanced knowledge and understanding of turf insect, disease and weed identification.
- Attend continuing education seminars, courses, trade shows, etc., to maintain current knowledge.
Educational Requirements
Two or four-year degree in turfgrass management or related field (agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science) from an accredited university.
Experience Requirements
Three (3) years of golf course experience with increasing responsibilities and career progression (preferably at a private institution).
Special Requirements
Valid Florida commercial pesticide applicator license or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
Employment is conditioned upon the satisfactory completion of a pre-employment substance abuse screen and criminal history background check.
