Assistant Superintendent

The Donald Ross designed course is the anchor point for the Club and is one of the oldest Golf Courses in the Greater Richmond area. The total footprint of the golf course is just over 80 acres.
The Assistant Superintendent is a critical role as the facility anchors around a spectacular golf course. The Donald Ross designed course is a historic piece of the Richmond Community. The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for assisting in the daily operations and management of the golf course maintenance team, helping to lead the team to meet and exceed standards. This includes overseeing turf management, grounds maintenance, tennis court maintenance and ensuring that the golf course consistently meets the highest standards of playability, aesthetic appeal, and environmental sustainability. The Assistant Superintendent will collaborate with the Superintendent to manage resources, staff, equipment, and chemical applications to maintain the course's health and appearance. Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Golf Course Superintendent in overseeing all aspects of golf course maintenance, including turf care, irrigation systems, equipment maintenance, and landscaping.
- Supervise and coordinate the maintenance and care of tees, fairways, greens, roughs, bunkers, and other areas of the golf course.
- Help with the planning and implementation of agronomic programs (fertilization, pesticide, herbicide applications) to ensure healthy turfgrass and optimal playing conditions.
- Monitor and maintain irrigation systems, including daily checks and adjustments for water distribution and usage.
- Assist in managing a team of maintenance staff, including scheduling, training, and delegating tasks to ensure smooth operations.
- Ensure that proper safety protocols and procedures are followed by the maintenance crew and all personnel.
- Maintain accurate records of turf care practices, equipment usage, chemical applications, and maintenance schedules.
- Troubleshoot and assist with the repair of irrigation systems and course equipment.
- Collaborate with the Superintendent to create and manage budgets for the maintenance department.
- Assist with the planning and execution of course improvements, renovations, and projects.
- Ensure compliance with local environmental regulations and best practices in turf management.
- Maintain effective communication with golf course management and players to ensure the course meets expectations and standards.
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or associate degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred (or equivalent work experience)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in golf course maintenance required; prefer at least 1 year in a supervisory or assistant role.
- Strong knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, pest control, and agronomy.
- Familiarity with the use and maintenance of turf equipment and irrigation systems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make decisions under pressure.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, management, and golfers.
- A valid driver’s license and pesticide applicator certification or the ability to obtain certification.
- Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed, especially during peak golf seasons.
- Preferred to have the ability to speak Spanish or open to learning the language.
Special Requirements
This position is performed outdoors for the majority of the time. The Assistant Superintendent role will require 40 hours per week. These hours will include hours in the early morning, weekends, and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; use fingers and hands to control computer mouse, type or write; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. This job is predominately outdoors so the Assistant Superintendent will be required to work outdoors for long periods of time in various weather conditions. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Job Benefits
Base Salary: $50,000 - $60,000

2 Weeks Paid Time Off for the first two years, increasing to 3 weeks at year 3.
Ability to earn educational/certification reimbursement.
