Position Summary:

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will have responsibilities including the maintenance, operation, management, preparation, improvements, and conditions of the golf course. The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will fulfill these responsibilities as a hands-on leader through positive and effective leadership by developing, training, managing, overseeing, coaching, and motivating the golf course team.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead, develop, train, oversee, manage, coach, motivate, and assist the golf course team.
  • Care and condition, of course, include turf management, irrigation, fertilization, and pesticide applications.
  • Maintain and ensure exemplary playing conditions at all times.
  • Inspect courses regularly to evaluate, recommend, and direct routine and large-scale improvements.
  • Work with the Superintendent to plan maintenance, improvements, and renovation projects for the golf course.
  • Attend Green and Golf Committee meetings when requested, present information, and explain complex ideas and concepts clearly and comprehensively.
  • Assist in preparing annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvements of the golf course by establishing maintenance standards and long-range plans.
  • Assist in managing and overseeing all golf course expenditures and exercise cost control measures, reporting discrepancies, implementing corrective action, and maintaining operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets as closely as possible.
  • Assist in planning, directing, and performing maintenance and project work, applying agronomic, business, and administrative expertise to achieve outstanding course maintenance standards and long-term goals.
  • Assist in managing course construction projects and renovations, report variances, and implement corrective action.
  • Assist in the interviewing and selection of the course team and direct, manage, oversee, develop, train, and coach the team—including but not limited to assistants, spray technicians, and other staff responsible for maintaining the course.
  • Assist other Course Superintendents, offering assistance and knowledge to make the Club’s golf courses and team better.
  • Assist in developing, recommending, implementing, maintaining, and overseeing the course drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.
  • Identify preventative measures, assess turf damage, and recommend, implement, and oversee the application and treatment of proper pesticides, fertilizers, and nutrients to improve the course.
  • Ensure chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations; maintain required records and strive to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
  • Oversee accurate and complete record-keeping for course maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, inventory, weather, timekeeping, and payroll for the team.
  • Implement and ensure the course team understands and exercises safe work practices.
  • Work closely with Golf Operations management to prepare for daily play, tournaments, and events.

Experience, Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, and Education:

  • Must be coachable and willing to learn the current operational, agronomic, and personnel systems at John’s Island Club while providing input from their own past experiences.
  • Have a BS or associate degree in turf grass management or related certificate and experience.
  • Leadership experience at a golf course with a proven record of having exceptional course conditions.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with budgeting.
  • Understanding of pest control and turf chemical and fertilizer products and their applications.
  • Knowledge in irrigation utilization, drainage installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Experience with course renovations and major projects.
  • Possess strong listening skills while being open-minded to new perspectives and ideas.
  • Possess an understanding of the game of golf and what is expected from the players regarding course conditions and playability.
  • Have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Have a current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator or the ability to acquire a license.
  • Have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and effectively communicate and direct individuals with limited or no English.
