Assistant Superintendent

Farmington Country Club is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our dynamic and professional turf management team. The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent of the Main Course will play a key role in assisting the Golf Course Superintendent with the management and enhancement of the golf course's overall condition. This individual will work closely with the superintendent and the maintenance team to ensure that the course remains in peak condition for our members and guests.

Farmington Country Club is a prestigious, member-owned club founded in 1927 and recognized as one of the top clubs in America. Nestled in the picturesque college town of Charlottesville, Virginia, Farmington offers its members an exceptional golfing experience. The Club features an 18-hole Main Course, a 10-hole East Course, two driving ranges, multiple short game practice areas, and an indoor golf performance center.

Responsibilities:

  1. Course Maintenance & Agronomy:

    • Collaborate with the Golf Course Superintendent to develop and implement daily, weekly, and seasonal agronomic plans that uphold the course's condition at the highest level.
    • Assist in managing the maintenance of fairways, greens, tees, bunkers, and roughs, ensuring optimal health and aesthetics.
    • Oversee the proper use of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals, while adhering to environmental stewardship practices.
    • Monitor and adjust irrigation systems to ensure the course receives adequate water distribution.
  2. Team Leadership & Coordination:

    • Supervise and lead the maintenance crew to effectively execute tasks such as mowing, edging, fertilization, pest control, and other maintenance activities.
    • Train and mentor staff on best practices for turf management, machinery operation, and safety protocols.
    • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that encourages teamwork and professional development.
  3. Budget & Resource Management:

    • Assist in managing the budget for the agronomy department, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources while maintaining course standards.
    • Monitor inventory levels of materials, equipment, and supplies, and work with the Golf Course Superintendent to place orders as needed.
  4. Equipment Management:

    • Oversee and assist with the maintenance of turf equipment, ensuring all machinery is functioning safely and efficiently.
    • Help ensure proper calibration and usage of equipment to maintain consistent turf conditions.
  5. Special Events & Tournament Preparation:

    • Assist with the setup and maintenance of the course for special events, tournaments, and member functions, ensuring the course meets the required standards for these occasions.
    • Work with the Golf Course Superintendent to meet tournament requirements and specifications.
  6. Safety & Compliance:

    • Enforce all safety procedures and practices to maintain a secure and compliant working environment for the maintenance team and club members.
    • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding pesticide use, environmental practices, and worker safety.
  7. Industry Knowledge & Professional Development:

    • Stay current with the latest industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in golf course management and agronomy.
    • Continuously seek opportunities for professional growth and improvement in turf management.
  8. Additional Responsibilities:

    • Assist with any other tasks and special projects as directed by the Golf Course Superintendent or senior management.
    • Demonstrate a proactive attitude in identifying areas for improvement and working to resolve issues efficiently.

Educational Requirements

A degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in golf course maintenance, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of agronomy, turfgrass species, and golf course operations.
  • Experience with irrigation systems, pest management, and fertilizer applications.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various types of turf equipment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work long hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain pesticide applicator certification.
  • Spanish speaking skills are helpful
