Assistant Superintendent

Wakonda Club is excited to announce the exceptional opportunity of Assistant Superintendent. Founded in 1922, Wakonda Club is a private, member-owned golf and country club located in the heart of Des Moines which also hosts the Principal Charity Classic on The Champions Tour annually. In 2023, Wakonda Club underwent a $7.4 Million Restoration which included a new irrigation system, rebuilding of five greens, green expansions on the remaining thirteen, fairway expansion & regrassing, tee construction & regrassing, and rebuilding of all bunkers.

The Assistant Superintendent will report directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and Lead Assistant Superintendent. Qualified candidates should be self-motivated, have a positive attitude, and are proactive in their communication regarding Golf Course maintenance and monitoring. The selected candidate will be directly involved in daily setup operations, irrigation system operation and hand watering, pesticide and fertilizer applications, training of staff, and record keeping.

Responsibilities/Duties

• Assist in executing daily departmental operations and goals

• Ensure the overall organization and cleanliness of the golf course, equipment and maintenance facility.

• Train staff on proper equipment operation, established procedures and techniques so that staff are aware of how to properly perform assigned tasks

• Repair of irrigation as required

• Apply pesticides and fertilizers accurately and responsibly

• Have a high level of attention to detail and to evaluate the course from the player's perspective

• Lead crews to execute projects

• Any other duties as may be required by Golf Course Superintendent or Lead Assistant Superintendent

Educational Requirements

· A degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management or related field is preferred

Experience Requirements

· Previous Golf Course experience required

· Strong written & verbal communication skills

· A valid driver's license, Iowa pesticide applicator license, or ability to obtain within six months of employment

· Must have a strong work ethic with the ability to work extended hours, including weekends & holidays are required
