Irrigation Technician

Responsibilities/Duties

The Irrigation Service Technician  is responsible for seasonal start up, shutdown, maintenance, and troubleshooting of residential and commercial irrigation systems for the Bruce Company.  This will include systems ranging in size from small residential to sports fields and nurseries.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Site Inspections and Repairs: Travels to customer sites to inspect, test, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation systems.
  • System Activation and Winterization: Conducts start-up activations and winterizes irrigation systems using compressed air as scheduled.
  • Maintenance and Documentation: Maintains and inspects existing irrigation systems, recording all maintenance and inspection results.
  • System Repairs: Repairs PVC and poly piping systems, sprinkler heads, control valves, and wiring, including locating and excavating underground components.
  • Controller Programming: Programs and adjusts irrigation controllers to optimize water application and efficiently manage irrigation.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Proficiency in electrical diagnostic tools to diagnose wiring problems in standard and two-wire irrigation systems is required.
  • Map Navigation and Planning: Locates service sites on maps, reads irrigation designs, and assists with creating "as-built" drawings.
  • Customer Interaction: Explains system operations and provides exceptional service to customers, handling inquiries and concerns.
  • Reporting: Completes service work orders, documenting materials, equipment, hours, and additional service details.
  • Leadership: Guides other technicians and crew members, ensuring adherence to company policies, attendance, conduct, and safety standards.
  • Equipment Operation: Operates trucks, Bobcats, compactors, trenchers, and masonry saws as required.
  • Tool Maintenance: Oversees the daily maintenance of all tools and equipment, including cleaning, sharpening, and fueling.
  • Winter Responsibilities: Manages snow routes and assists with snow removal as needed during the winter.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensures team compliance with company safety policies and procedures.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Team Supervision: Delegates tasks and provides direction to Irrigation Technicians.
  • Coaching and Mentorship: Offers mentoring, feedback, and constructive guidance to crew members.
  • Team Environment: Fosters a team-oriented, positive work environment and resolves issues as they arise.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor Work: Primarily works outdoors year-round, including in inclement weather (rain, snow, heat, or cold).
  • Noise Levels: Moderate noise level with hearing protection required during equipment operation.
  • Chemical Exposure: May be exposed to chemicals and fertilizers as part of the job.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, the Irrigation Service Technician - Lead must demonstrate proficiency in essential duties and possess the skills to interact positively with team members, regulatory agencies, customers, and other personnel.

Education, Certification, and License

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Driver’s License: Valid license with a good record required; CDL is beneficial.

Experience

  • Irrigation and Landscape Construction: 2-3 years of landscape construction experience with irrigation system expertise is required.
  • Leadership: Previous experience as a foreman or crew leader is preferred.
  • Equipment Operation: Experience with trenchers, excavators, loaders, Bobcats, skid steers, or similar equipment used in landscape installation.

Skills

  • Leadership Abilities: Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and guide a team.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong troubleshooting skills and extensive knowledge of irrigation systems.
  • Reading and Interpretation: Ability to read design plans and interpret specifications.
  • Problem-Solving: Capable of identifying and resolving issues quickly.
  • Communication: Effective in English; bilingual Spanish-English skills are advantageous.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical Activity: Frequent standing, walking, squatting, stooping, and lifting (up to 50 lbs) throughout the day.
  • Excavation: Uses hand tools and equipment for excavation as needed.
  • Manual Dexterity: Requires fine motor skills for handling small equipment and tools.

Job Specifications

  • Position Type: Full-time, seasonal.
  • Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM (40-55 hours per week) during peak season (April to November); Saturday hours as needed.
  • Winter Hours: Hours may vary from December to March based on snow removal needs.
  • Overtime: Occasionally required as dictated by workload.
