About Fort Washington Country Club

The Golf Course Superintendent at Fort Washington Country Club in Fresno is responsible for the daily operation and management of one of the premier 18- Hole Private Clubs in the Central Valley Region of California. 

Located in the heart of the Central Valley, lies Fort Washington Country Club, a private club with excellent facilities, services and amenities. The club offers 18 dramatic holes of golf at 6,729 yards with expansive elevation changes throughout the course, unlike any other course in the region. 

Fort Washington Country Club is located in close proximity to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. It is an incredible family environment with easy access to rivers, mountains, hiking, fishing, and skiing.

 The club has recently undergone an extensive fairway conversion program to new Latitude 36 Hybrid bermudagrass fairways and green surrounds.

Educational Requirements

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Agronomy, Horticulture or Plant Science.
  • An associate’s degree (AS) from an intensive two-year turf grass management program.
  • 3-5 years’ progressive experience as a Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Prior work as an assistant to an experienced Golf Course Superintendent will be considered.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a private club setting.
  • Experience with Toro Lynx Irrigation central operation and sprinkler heads.
  • Intricate knowledge of warm season grasses in particular: Hybrid bermudagrass on tees, fairways and green surrounds and Common bermudagrass roughs in a hot, arid summer climate.
  • Experience with Poa annua/Bentgrass management on greens in warm summer climate.

Experience Requirements

  • Maintains all grounds and course maintenance equipment according to the club’s turf management program.
  • Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to department.
  • Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
  • Supervises all planting, fertilizing, care and removal of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course.
  • Maintains course in proper playing condition.
  • Inspects course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
  • Manages all construction, maintenance and renovations on the golf course.
  • Administers a Toro Lynx irrigation system.
  • Oversees repairs of broken water lines or valves and may perform necessary repairs in an emergency.
  • Records all maintenance on course.
  • Supervises operation of the Equipment Repair Shop and a fleet of Toro maintenance equipment.
  • Prepares the annual budget for department; takes corrective action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met.
  • Establishes short- and long-range plans for the golf course.
  • Selects and prepares proper fertilizers and nutrients for proper fertility programs.
  • Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation and watering systems.
  • Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees, members, and guests on course in compliance with local, state and federal laws; implements and manages the club’s hazard communication (HAZCOM) program.
  • Ensures that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations and maintains required records.
  • Communicates as necessary with the Director of Golf and Green’s Chairman to discuss conditions of course, maintenance plans, scheduled events.
  • Communicates as necessary with Greens Committee or other applicable committees.
  • Attends staff and management meetings.
  • Keeps members informed about current and future maintenance activities.
  • Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates including safety training for equipment use and proper handling of fertilizers, herbicides, and all other chemicals used on course; assures that MSDSs are available in convenient location.
  • Makes recommendations for capital improvement and purchases.
  • Ensures proper landscaping for property outside of golf course including the clubhouse and surrounding areas.
  • Coordinates applicable work with outside contractors.
  • Determines when course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues.
  • Conducts other appropriate tasks assigned by the Director of Golf.

Special Requirements

Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations

  • Understanding the rules of golf.
  • Administrative and executive ability, especially critical in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Knowledge of ability to perform required role in emergency situations.

Licenses and Special Requirements

  • Class A or B - GCSAA
  • California Pesticide Application License or Certification.
  • Valid driver’s license.
