Golf Course Superintendent
Founded in 1970, Thunder Hills Country Club sits nestled in the scenic Mississippi Valley and features a meticulously maintained championship golf course. With strategic elevation changes and thoughtful design, the course offers a challenge suitable for players of every skill level.
In 2016 the Club embarked on $1,000,000 renovation project. On the golf course, all bunkers were renovated with new drainage, liners and sand. New restroom facilities were also built on the front and back nine. In November, 2021 a $200,000 course improvement project was completed. This project included the addition of new fairway bunkers on two holes, new tee box additions on four holes and new cart path additions on three holes. 2023 saw the Club embark on a $450,000 project which included rip-rap installation around holes #11 & #16 ponds, dredging of hole #16 pond and installation of a new irrigation pump and pump house. In September, 2024 a new maintenance building was completed for $400,000.
Job Summary
As Golf Course Superintendent, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and agronomic practices for the golf course and adjacent grounds and the upkeep of all golf course-related equipment. Responsibilities also include overseeing swimming pool maintenance including start-up and winterization. Previous supervisory experience is a requirement for the position. This position includes a competitive compensation and benefits package.
Responsibilities
• Maintains all grounds including the golf course and clubhouse surrounds
• Supervises all planting, fertilizing, chemical applications and other care of turf, plants, shrubs and trees on the golf course and clubhouse surrounds
• Hires, supervises and develops Assistant Superintendent, mechanic and other employees in the maintenance department
• Informs members about present and future maintenance activities
• Attends Board meetings and Grounds Committee meetings on a quarterly basis or as needed.
• Coordinates scheduling of all personnel assigned to the department
• Communicates frequently with the General Manger and Head Golf Professional to discuss activities, goals, plans and member feedback
• Prepares and manages an annual budget plan for the golf course maintenance operation
• Maintains inventory and oversees all repairs and scheduled maintenance of all golf course maintenance equipment
• Oversees swimming pool maintenance including start-up and winterization. Successful completion of state Certified Pool Operator course required within 1 year of hire.
• Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees of the maintenance
• Supervises maintenance and operation of drainage, irrigation, and other mechanical watering systems
• Develops chemical and fertilizing plan on an annual basis
• Maintains healthy turf and high-quality playing conditions for members/guests of the Club
• Prepares and maintains all recordkeeping for maintenance department and swimming pool
• Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager or Board of Directors
Experience Requirements
Requirements
• 3-5 years turf grass management experience required
• Supervisory, coaching and staff development experience required
• A four-year college degree preferred, but not required
• GCSAA Member preferred, but not required
• Knowledge of budgeting and expense management
• Knowledge of local, federal, and state laws and regulations affecting management of golf course operations and swimming pool
• Must have a strong business aptitude and passion for the golf business
• Must Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Must be highly organized and efficient with a high attention to detail
• Must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
• Must have basic computer skills, Word and Excel
Working Conditions
• Often required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls
• Occasionally be required to balance, stoop, twist upper body, kneel, and climb
• Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30lbs occasionally
• Moderate exposure to extreme cold, heat, working outdoors, chemicals, pesticides, gasoline, vibration, pollen, dust, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards
• Work extended hours during golf season
