By The Lookout Mountain Club, - updated November 8 - Lookout Mountain, Georgia
The Lookout Mountain Club located in Lookout Mountain, Georgia is seeking a Director of Grounds to lead in the oversight and management of a world class golf property. The course was recently renovated in 2023 by golf course architects Tyler Rae and Kyle Franz, it was lauded as the top renovation of 2023 by Golf Digest. Lookout Mountain is one of around 30 remaining courses in America designed by Raynor and the only one he designed on a mountain top, making it unique in that it feels like an island in the sky. With its challenging holes and breathtaking mountain views, it is a favorite course among professional and amateur golfers. It is home to several prestigious tournaments throughout the year, including the ever-popular member/guest tournament called "The Swing Ding." ABOUT THE CLUB: Situated atop Lookout Mountain, overlooking the vibrant city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, lies the Lookout Mountain Club. Its history is as rich as the rolling greens that grace its slopes. Born from a vision in the 1920s, the club was conceived as an exclusive resort community, akin to legendary destinations like Pinehurst, The Homestead, and The Greenbrier. A world-class golf course, designed by the renowned architect Seth Raynor, would be its crown jewel. However, tragedy struck with Raynor's passing before completion. His trusted associate, Charles Banks, stepped in, finishing the course in 1927. Though initially christened "Fairyland," the ambitious project faced challenges – from the rugged mountain terrain to the devastating Great Depression. Yet, the Lookout Mountain Golf Club persevered. It emerged as a private haven, fostering camaraderie amongst its members. The club is based in Georgia but affiliated with Tennessee golf associations. Throughout the years, it has hosted esteemed championships, upholding the high standards envisioned by Raynor. With its challenging layout and breathtaking panoramic views, the course is a favorite among golfers of all skill levels. It remains a vibrant hub for prestigious tournaments, including the beloved "Swing Ding" member-guest event. In 2023, backed by the membership, The Lookout Mountain golf course was restored to Raynor's original plan under the expertise of architects Tyler Rae and Kyle Franz. SPORTS FIELD SOLUTIONS IS SEEKING A: Sports Turf Manager To maintain immaculate sports fields at Lakehill Preparatory School in Dallas. WHO YOU ARE You love sports. You spent your childhood summers on baseball fields, your fall Friday nights under stadium lights, and your winters on hard courts. You love a natural grass playing surface. Whereas your friends are in awe when they look at a professional baseball field, you are at home. You know the difference between a ¾” height of cut and a ½”, and you understand just how hard it is to get those perfect infield edges at Globe Life Field. You are meticulous. Others see perfection when they look at your fields, but all you see is the almost-imperceptible divot in center field from the previous night’s diving catch. You love being part of a team. Could you do it alone? Sure. Do you prefer the camaraderie of a team working to build a premium brand? Absolutely. WHO WE ARE We love sports fields. How much? As much as Texas loves its high school football. That's a lot. We know that the difference between feeling like a professional athlete and a high school walk-on is often the quality of the playing surface. We love nothing more than the glimmer of stadium lights on a freshly-cut, pristine natural grass playing surface. Finally, we believe that great people transform businesses. We provide a vision and then ask our people to creatively use their talents to achieve it. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain premium sports field surfaces by implementing best practices in mowing, fertilization, pest management, aeration, moisture management, top dressing and more Prepare, maintain, and restore all baseball/softball clay areas including infield skins, mounds, home plate and warning track, and perform other tasks fundamental to athletic turf care Monitor, report and resolve field issues such as turf stress, disease, irrigation problems and pest management issues Communicate with coaching staff and school officials regarding practice/game schedules, camp dates, and inclement weather situations Perform preventative maintenance operations on various pieces of equipment Perform irrigation audits to ensure system is operating efficiently Track inventory and monitor purchasing of fertilizers and field materials REQUIREMENTS If the description above resonates with you, we’d love to see your application. Ideal candidates will have at least a high school diploma, though we prefer candidates with a degree in horticulture, agronomy, or a related field. We are looking for someone with a minimum of 3 years of management experience in the sports turf industry. In addition to these formal qualifications, we value candidates who demonstrate a passion for learning and consistently producing high-quality work. Success in this role also requires excellent communication skills and a genuine appreciation for collaboration and team success.
