Job Description

Hamilton Farm Golf Club, in Gladstone, New Jersey, is seeking a career-minded Assistant Superintendent to join our grounds management team.

This position is built for a turf professional who intends to become a Golf Course Superintendent and wants the range of experience required to get there. Our goal is to provide our assistants with the responsibility, exposure, and mentorship necessary to prepare them for that next step, and this position is structured around that intent.

Hamilton Farm is a 36-hole private club set on the historic Brady estate in the Somerset Hills. The Highlands, a Hurdzan/Fry championship layout playing over seven thousand yards, features rugged bunkering with high sand flashing, while the Hickory is a full eighteen-hole, USGA-rated par 3 course. Together with the practice facilities, they present thirty-nine greens across terrain that runs through mature hardwood forest, past ponds and wetlands, and over ravines and open highlands, where shade, drainage, and microclimate variation demand decisions that change hole to hole.

Reporting directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and working under the Director of Grounds, the successful candidate will join a management team of three assistant superintendents and will work across both golf courses within a department that totals thirty-six at the height of the season. Areas of responsibility are assigned and rotated across the team. As confidence and trust are earned, so are greater opportunities to broaden experience and responsibility. It is not our intent to have an assistant specialize in a single task indefinitely, and the depth of the management staff allows for meaningful ownership of projects and programs while keeping coverage and scheduling sustainable through the season.

Over the course of a season, the successful applicant will be involved in and become proficient in all aspects of golf course management, including:

• Daily maintenance operations and golf course setup
• Agronomic planning
• Irrigation management, system troubleshooting, and repair
• Water management
• Pesticide and fertilizer applications
• Tournament preparation
• Grounds crew leadership and staff management
• Budget planning and adherence
• In-house construction and renovation projects
• Management meetings

A significant amount of in-house project work is scheduled for this winter, including fairway drainage installation, irrigation system improvements, and tree removal and canopy management. These projects are performed in-house by our own staff rather than contracted out, and the successful candidate will be actively involved in the planning, layout, and installation of the work, developing the practical construction and troubleshooting skills that are difficult to acquire any other way. It should be noted that drainage, irrigation, and tree management in particular are long-term commitments here, and the assistant in this position will see projects through from planning to the agronomic results that follow the next season.
