Sports Turf Assistant - State College Spikes
Medlar Field at Lubrano Park is Home to the State College Spikes (MLB Draft League) and Penn State Baseball. Located on the campus of Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, the Spikes share the facility with the Penn State Baseball team. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park underwent a total field renovation down to the drainage in the fall of 2023. The Sports Turf Department is looking for a reliable assistant that seeks to learn the profession and ultimately become a Sports Turf Director in their own right.
Job Description
The Sports Turf Assistant will assist in all aspects of maintaining a baseball field to professional standards. In the absence of the Sports Turf Director, the assistant is expected to lead the crew and projects. Along with field duties, the Sports Turf Assistant will learn to work and communicate with front office staff, managers, players and umpires.

Job Requirements
- Working in baseball is preferred but not necessary
- Experience operating equipment such as tractors, hydro stat and clutch operated vehicles
- Construction Experience
- Landscaping Experience
- Basic Knowledge of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass
- Basic knowledge of infield dirt and mound clays
- Knowledge of baseball field layout
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Google Docs
- Excellent communication skills
- Basic mechanical knowledge
- Infield skin repair, maintenance, and preparation
- Direct and/or repair and maintain pitcher’s mounds, home plate, and bullpen areas
- Fertilizer/pesticide applications
- Equipment maintenance
- Game day preparation, lining, watering, delegating jobs to the crew, etc.
- Lead batting practice set up and breakdown
- Coordinating with coaches for early workouts
- Tarp preparation, tarp pulling, and securing the tarp
- Edging, mowing with rotary and a triplex reel mower
- Maintaining sod nursery
- Irrigation repair, spot watering, setting up irrigation schedules
- Interview, supervise and at times schedule part time staff
- Delegating job duties during games to keep the shop clean and organized
Hours and Expectations
- Ability to show up to work on time and before the crew and be ready to delegate job duties
- Ability to work game nights, game/practice weekends, and holidays
- Ability to lift 50 lbs regularly and 70lbs on occasion
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and work in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to obtain Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicators license
