Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled, dependable and self-motivated Assistant Equipment Manager to join our golf course maintenance operation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing and repairing a diverse fleet of professional turf equipment, utility vehicles, tractors and small-engine equipment. This position requires strong mechanical ability with an emphasis on electrical diagnostics, hydraulic troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and precision cutting-unit setup.

Previous golf course or turf-equipment experience is preferred; however, experienced automotive, diesel, agricultural or heavy-equipment technicians with strong diagnostic skills are encouraged to apply.

Primary Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair and maintain golf course maintenance equipment, including greens mowers, fairway mowers, rough mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, aerators and other specialty turf equipment.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, cooling-system service, belt replacement, bearing inspection and other manufacturer-recommended services.
• Diagnose electrical problems, including starting and charging systems, wiring, switches, sensors, relays, controllers and related electronic systems.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, hoses and hydraulic leaks.
• Troubleshoot and repair gasoline and diesel engines.
• Perform reel and bedknife grinding and maintain precision cutting units.
• Set reel-to-bedknife clearance, height of cut and other cutting-unit adjustments to maintain excellent quality of cut.
• Rebuild and repair reels, rollers, bearings and cutting-unit components as necessary.
• Perform field repairs when equipment breaks down on the golf course.
• Perform welding and light fabrication as needed.
• Maintain accurate equipment service and repair records.
• Monitor equipment hours and preventative-maintenance intervals.
• Assist with parts inventory and ordering.
• Identify developing equipment problems before they result in major failures or downtime.
• Maintain a clean, organized and safe shop environment.
• Assist with winter equipment maintenance, rebuilds and preparation of the equipment fleet for the upcoming golf season.

Equipment Experience

Experience working with professional turf equipment is preferred, particularly equipment manufactured by:

John Deere • Toro • Salsco • Club Car • Husqvarna • Kubota • Yanmar • Honda • Kawasaki

Experience with greens mowers, fairway mowers, rotary rough mowers, utility vehicles, tractors and other commercial turf equipment is highly desirable.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

• Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities.
• Experience diagnosing electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Experience repairing gasoline and diesel engines.
• Ability to read electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams and service manuals.
• Experience with reel grinding and precision cutting-unit setup is highly desirable.
• Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
• Ability to use diagnostic tools including multimeters and other electronic test equipment.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize repairs based on operational needs.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Good communication and organizational skills.
• Basic computer skills for maintenance records, parts lookup and service information.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to safely lift approximately 50–75 pounds.

Golf course equipment experience is preferred but not required for a candidate with strong mechanical, electrical and hydraulic diagnostic experience.

Experienced turf technicians as well as qualified diesel, automotive, agricultural and heavy-equipment mechanics are encouraged to apply.

About Oakland Hills Country Club

Oakland Hills Country Club is a Donald Ross designed 36-hole, private club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, established in 1916.  The South Course is consistently ranked in the top 20 in Golf Digest and has hosted 17 major championships including the 2004 Ryder Cup and 6 U.S. Opens.  Oakland Hills contracted Gil Hanse to restore the famed South Course to the masterpiece that Donald Ross created. We are scheduled to host 8 USGA championships including 2 Women's U.S. Opens and 2 Men's U.S. Opens.  We have a new state-of-the-art maintenance facility with tools provided. The Assistant Equipment Manager will report directly to the Head Equipment Manager and work closely with the Equipment Technicians in the shop on daily quality checks and preventive maintenance of all equipment.  Our equipment consists mostly of John Deere.  Equipment is always being updated to industry standards.  The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail to provide our membership with two championship-conditioned golf courses every day.
