Kennett Square Golf & Country Club is a premier private club located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley. Our 1922 Donald Ross-designed golf course provides a unique setting and a high-quality golfing experience for our members.

We are seeking two Assistant Golf Course Superintendents to join our agronomy team as KSGCC enters an exciting period of significant golf course improvements and capital projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious turf professional who wants to be involved in both day-to-day golf course management and large-scale renovation, construction, and grow-in projects.

An Exciting Time to Join KSGCC

KSGCC is entering one of the most significant periods of golf course improvement in the club's history.

Upcoming projects include:

  • Major golf course irrigation improvements
  • Extensive regrassing of greens, tees, and fairways
  • Golf course renovation and grow-in projects
  • Practice area renovation
  • Construction and transition into a newly renovated agronomy facility and shop
  • Continued improvements to course conditioning, playability, and presentation

The Assistant Superintendents will have the opportunity to play an important role in planning and executing these projects, as well as managing the course through the renovation and grow-in process.

For someone looking to build their experience and advance within the golf course industry, this position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with projects that are not part of a typical day-to-day maintenance operation.

Position Overview

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and fellow Assistant Superintendent(s) to oversee the daily maintenance and operation of the golf course.

Successful candidates will be expected to lead from the field, communicate effectively, manage people and resources, and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.

The Assistant Superintendent will have an active role in establishing daily priorities, directing staff, maintaining course standards, and ensuring that work is completed efficiently and to the expectations of the agronomy department.

Strong communication between the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and maintenance staff is an essential part of the position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and supervising daily golf course maintenance activities
  • Lead and supervise groundskeeping staff while maintaining high standards for quality, efficiency, and safety
  • Help establish daily priorities and ensure crews are properly assigned and productive
  • Oversee maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and other areas of the golf course
  • Assist with irrigation operation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance
  • Assist with turfgrass fertility and plant protection programs
  • Properly handle, mix, and apply pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with label requirements and regulations
  • Scout for turfgrass diseases, insects, weeds, and other agronomic issues
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with inventory management
  • Train employees in proper maintenance practices and safety procedures
  • Communicate daily with the Superintendent and other assistants regarding staffing, priorities, course conditions, and progress toward daily goals
  • Assist with golf course renovation, irrigation, regrassing, construction, and grow-in projects
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and professional agronomy operation
  • Take initiative and make sound decisions in the field while keeping the Superintendent informed
  • Perform other duties necessary to maintain the golf course to the highest standards

What We're Looking For

We are looking for individuals who are motivated, organized, dependable, and interested in developing their careers in golf course management.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A 2- or 4-year degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field
  • 2–3 years of golf course maintenance experience
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • The ability to identify and manage turfgrass diseases, pests, and other agronomic issues

  • A PA Pesticide Applicator's License or the ability to obtain one within six months
  • The ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays

Candidates with strong practical golf course experience who do not meet every listed qualification are encouraged to apply.

Schedule & Work-Life Balance

The Assistant Superintendents will alternate weekends. During the growing season, typical hours will range from approximately 45–65 hours per week, depending on weather, course conditions, projects, and weekend responsibilities.

We understand the demands of golf course management and encourage our management team to take appropriate time off during the summer months to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $70,000–$80,000+ salary based on experience and qualifications
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance available
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match after six months
