High Hampton, a Golf Digest Top 25 Best Golf Courses in North Carolina and a celebrated mountain destination for more than 100 years, is seeking two Assistant Superintendents to join our progressive and career-focused Grounds Department. These openings come as a result of continued internal advancement, five former Assistants have moved into Golf Course Superintendent roles over the past seven years, including the two most recent promotions. These positions play a key role in the daily maintenance and management of our Tom Fazio–designed golf course and surrounding grounds. High Hampton is committed to developing future leaders, many staff members have advanced internally, and we actively help assistants build realistic goals and achieve them.
Club Highlights
- Operating Budget: $3.7M
- Capital Budget: $500,000–$1,000,000
- Annual Rounds: ~15,500
- Staffing: 12 full-time, 26 seasonal
- Typical Schedule:
- In-season: Every other weekend off
- Off-season: Every weekend off
- Turf Types:
- Pure Distinction greens and approaches
- Crystal Bluelinks tees and fairways
- Tall turf-type fescue / Kentucky bluegrass rough
- Fine fescue secondary roughs
- Irrigation System: Toro Lynx 2-wire with Infinity heads
- Equipment: John Deere carts, Toro mowers
- Future Projects: Lake dredging, tee reshaping, rough contamination improvements
- Recent Renovations: Significant 3-year renovation; Tom Fazio redesign; continued strategic capital improvements

Initial Priorities of the Position
- Assimilate into the team and fit into the existing culture
- Learn High Hampton’s programs, property, systems, and maintenance processes
- Support daily operations and uphold championship-level conditioning standards
- Build rapport with the management team and assist in leading seasonal staff
Key Responsibilities, Knowledge, Skills & Aptitude
- Assist in daily golf course setup, conditioning, and operation
- Lead, train, and motivate staff to maintain high standards
- Participate in chemical and fertilizer applications
- Assist with irrigation management and troubleshooting
- Help manage projects related to renovations, drainage, and course improvements
- Maintain accurate records for spray programs, moisture, and cultural practices
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills, proactive communication, and problem-solving ability
- Uphold safety standards and ensure proper equipment operation
- Exhibit strong leadership presence and contribute to overall staff culture
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree in turfgrass science or a related field (preferred, not required)
- Entry-level to 3 years of golf course maintenance or management experience
- Will consider additional experience in lieu of a degree
- Experience with cool-season turf preferred
- Desire to grow into a Superintendent role in the future
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $50,000–$70,000
