Assistant Superintendent

Position Overview 

Valley Country Club is seeking a highly motivated, career-driven Assistant Golf Course Superintendent whose primary career goal is to become a Golf Course Superintendent. Working closely alongside the Director of Agronomy, you will gain hands-on experience in every aspect of golf course management, capital execution, and departmental leadership. Course Description

Valley Country Club is a historic 18-hole private facility situated in Warwick, Rhode Island, on 130 acres. Originally designed in 1925 by W.H. Follett and later expanded by Geoffrey Cornish, Valley Country Club offers a rich tradition of classic New England golf. Valley Country Club is actively executing a 10-Year Master Plan, making this an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious professional looking to build a high-impact portfolio. Over the next few years, Valley Country Club is launching a series of major course renovations and facility upgrades designed to elevate both the playing experience and operational efficiency. The centerpiece of our long-term Golf Course Master Plan features strategic tee box additions and expansions, widened fairway contouring, and greens expansion to restore classic hole designs. Supporting these turf enhancements is a comprehensive modernization of our irrigation system, incorporating advanced scheduling technologies to optimize water delivery, improve turf health, and maximize resource efficiency. Furthermore, our operational infrastructure is taking a giant leap forward as construction begins this winter on a brand-new, modern Maintenance Facility, providing our agronomy team with a state-of-the-art home to manage equipment, plan daily conditioning, and execute capital projects.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Lead and schedule daily labor routines, train team members, oversee crew workflow, and foster a positive, safe, and productive work environment.
• Play a key role in executing master plan developments, tee and green construction/expansions, irrigation upgrades, and building project workflows.
• Oversee daily moisture management, hand-watering schedules, moisture meter mapping, and system maintenance/scheduling.
• Perform exact plant protectant and nutrient applications, calibrate application equipment, and manage strict chemical record-keeping and compliance.
• Actively participate in budget tracking, agronomic planning, vendor relations, and tournament preparation.

Qualifications & Candidate Profile

• Driven individual with a strong desire to advance to a Golf Course Superintendent role.
• Education: Degree or Certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field (preferred).
• Prior golf course maintenance experience; tournament prep and construction experience are a plus.
• Valid driver’s license 
•  Possess (or have the ability to obtain within 90 days) a Rhode Island Pesticide Applicator’s License.
• Skills: Strong communication, leadership, time management, and attention to detail.
