Assistant Superintendent
Job Details
Golf Business Network is proud to partner with Talbot Country Club in the search for its next Assistant Superintendent.
View Position Summary
Talbot Country Club is a private, family-oriented club on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Founded in 1910, it’s the fourth-oldest country club in the state and the premier private club on the Shore. The championship 18 is an Ed Ault design with Poa/bentgrass greens and bermudagrass fairways and tees across roughly 160 maintained acres, and it has hosted the Maryland State Open and other MSGA championships. Talbot members also belong to clubs like Congressional, Chevy Chase, Caves Valley and Medalist.
Talbot is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to join Superintendent Derek Haley, a long-tenured fellow assistant, a full-time equipment manager and a crew of about 18, most of whom stay on year-round. Crew management is the heart of the role. You’ll lead the morning job board, organize labor around a busy tee time schedule that changes every day, follow up on the details and hold a largely Spanish-speaking crew to a high standard. You’ll also have a hand in moisture management, irrigation, spray programs for cool- and warm-season turf, and tournament setup.
What sets Talbot apart is how the work gets done. The club is in the middle of a long-range master plan with architect Joel Weiman, and the maintenance team handles 80% or more of the construction in-house, working out of a brand-new shop. This winter that means finishing the 18th tee complex and rebuilding the 17th green complex. The club is also in early planning for a new irrigation system, and this assistant will be part of it from design review and bidding through construction. Along the way you’ll run the excavator and skid steer, shape to the architect’s plans, learn the budget process and sit in on greens committee meetings.
The right person leads from the front. They’re confident, firm but fair, and work alongside the crew to earn its respect. Leadership and an eye for detail matter more here than a long turf résumé, and Derek is looking for someone who wants to become a superintendent. Two of his former assistants have gone on to superintendent roles. A turf degree or certificate is preferred, along with spray experience and a Maryland pesticide license or the ability to get one within 120 days.
Location: Easton sits in the heart of the Eastern Shore, with some of the best hunting, fishing, boating and sailing on the East Coast, and Baltimore and Washington are about 90 minutes away.
Target start: December 2026
Salary Range
From $60,000 to $80,000 per year
