Position Summary
The Chemical Technician, under the supervision of the golf course superintendent or assistant superintendent, performs chemical applications on golf course properties; fertilizes tees, greens and fairways. The chemical technician is responsible for reading, understanding and keeping current with chemical labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). This position is also responsible for compiling preliminary reports of pesticide usage for the golf course superintendent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs routine safety inspections on all spraying equipment.
- Maintains chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations, and is responsible for the safety and direction of chemical handlers and/or helpers.
- Tracks chemical inventory.
- Maintain accurate records for fertilizer and chemical applications and pest control practices.
- Supervise all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, and trees on the golf course and grounds. Assist with the development and implementation of a fertilizer, aeration and Integrated Pest Management program for proper turf grass and plant care.
- Supervise and perform various maintenance duties to maintain the golf course in proper playing condition.
- Supervise the development and maintenance of drainage and irrigation.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, OSHA rules and regulations, relating to chemical and fertilizer storage and disposal, employee safety, public safety, etc.
- Must have completed training requirements as demanded by the state and federal governments, including those required by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.
- Complete knowledge of chemical application equipment.
- Current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
- American Red Cross first-aid training certificate.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
Knowledge in the safe mechanical operation and calibration of the following types of equipment:
- Mechanically pressurized spray equipment
- Hand-operated spray equipment
- Hand-operated rotary spreaders
- Hand-operated drop spreaders
- Utility tractors
Education/Qualifications/Certifications
- High school education required, college degree preferred.
- 3 years golf course maintenance, supervisory and/or management experience.
- Demonstrated experience and capability in the areas of budget development, fiscal management, strategic planning, staff management.
- Demonstrated quality written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems; efficiently handle multiple duties under pressure.
- Positive attitude, professional manner and appearance in all situations.
Position Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to:
- Give and/or follow verbal and written instructions and supervise subordinates
- Visually inspect all work areas, golf course and grounds
- Operate vehicles and equipment for several hours at a time
- Perform mathematical calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Stand, sit, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, bend and kneel for up to 5 hours at a time
- Lift up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 20 lbs constantly
Compensation
- $18-$22 per hour with possible overtime
