Golf Course Mechanic

1. The Precision Mowing (Reels, Bed Knives, & Height of Cut)

• Reels and Bed Knives: A reel mower works like a pair of scissors. A cylinder of spinning blades (the reel) catches the grass and slices it against a stationary bottom blade (the bed knife). "Reel grinders and bed knife work" means the mechanic knows how to use specialized grinding machines to keep these blades razor-sharp and perfectly aligned.

• Height of Cut: Golf greens, fairways, and roughs all require different, extremely precise grass lengths (often measured in fractions of an inch or millimeters). The mechanic is responsible for calibrating the mowers so they cut at the exact required height consistently.

2. Small Engine Repair

Beyond the big mowers, a golf course relies on smaller gas-powered tools to keep the edges neat and the trees trimmed. This requires standard two-stroke and four-stroke small engine repair skills to fix and maintain chainsaws and commercial weed whackers.

3. Shop Management (Logs & Maintenance Bay)

This is the administrative and organizational side of the job.

• Maintenance Logs: Keeping detailed records of when each machine had its oil changed, parts replaced, or blades sharpened so nothing breaks down mid-season.

• Maintenance Bay: Keeping the actual mechanic shop clean, safe, and well-organized.

4. Welding

Heavy equipment breaks. Having welding experience means the mechanic can fuse broken metal frames back together or fabricate custom metal parts on the fly without having to order expensive replacements.
