Position Summary

The Maintenance Superintendent/Groundskeeper is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the golf course grounds to ensure optimal playing conditions and appearance. This role supports a historic, Perry Maxwell-designed small-town golf course, preserving its character through an acute attention to detail while delivering exceptional course conditions for members and guests. The position directs daily grounds maintenance activities, manages irrigation systems, applies fertilizers and chemicals, maintains equipment, and supervises groundskeeping staff. The Superintendent works closely with ownership to plan projects, maintain operational efficiency, and ensure the golf course meets high-quality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and perform golf course maintenance activities to maintain exceptional course conditions.
  • Maintain, diagnose, and repair irrigation systems to ensure proper turf health and water management.
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other turf management products in accordance with applicable regulations and maintain accurate application records.
  • Monitor and manage greens moisture levels to promote healthy turf and superior playing conditions for Bentgrass.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on golf course equipment and machinery.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise course improvement projects and maintenance initiatives.
  • Schedule and assign work activities for groundskeeping staff to maximize productivity and efficiency.
  • Recruit, train, motivate, supervise, and evaluate maintenance personnel.
  • Monitor equipment and machine shop operations, providing regular updates to ownership regarding equipment status and maintenance needs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, environmental regulations, and company policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by ownership.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in golf course maintenance, grounds management, turfgrass management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, turfgrass management practices, fertilizer and chemical applications, and equipment maintenance.
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate maintenance equipment safely.
  • Chemical License for ornamentals - preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials as required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical labor for extended periods.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining the quality, playability, and overall appearance of the golf course while leading a productive and engaged maintenance team.

Language Skills:

We welcome candidates from diverse language backgrounds. The ability to understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform job duties, follow safety guidelines, complete required documentation, and collaborate with staff and ownership is required. Additional language skills are valued and encouraged.

Reasoning Ability:

Utilize visual acuity to maintain equipment, read technical information, and use a keyboard. Accurately complete detailed forms and reports. Calculate figures and amounts.

Special information:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work Environment:

Work both indoors and outdoors. Work environment is dusty, noisy and may be wet and cold during the winter months and inclement weather. Occasional work from heights up to 20 feet. Occasional work in tight or hard to reach spaces.
