Golf Course Superintendent

Old Waverly Club is seeking an experienced Golf Course Superintendent to join its high-performing agronomy team. This position will oversee the day-to-day maintenance and agronomic operations of one of the Club's two 18-hole golf courses, Old Waverly or Mossy Oak.  

This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for maintaining exceptional playing conditions while effectively managing people, resources, equipment, and agronomic programs. The ideal candidate will bring strong turfgrass knowledge, excellent communication and people skills, sound problem-solving ability, and a genuine understanding of golf and playability.

The Golf Course Superintendent will report directly to the Director of Agronomy, Brad Suggs and work closely with the Club's leadership team to deliver the level of playing conditions expected at one of the South's premier private golf destinations.

ABOUT OLD WAVERLY

• 36-hole private golf property featuring Old Waverly and Mossy Oak
• Approximately 25,000 annual rounds across both courses
  • Old Waverly: approximately 15,000 annual rounds
  • Mossy Oak: approximately 10,000 annual rounds
• Typical work schedule: 40-50 hours per week during the golf season and 35-40 hours per week during the off-season

  • 419 Bermuda grass tees, fairways, and rough

• Toro equipment fleet, which is leased

• Establish a strong working relationship with Brad Suggs and the Club's agronomy and leadership teams
• Build relationships with the golf course maintenance staff and establish clear expectations for performance and accountability
• Maintain consistently high playing conditions across the golf course
• Evaluate and refine agronomic programs based on course conditions, weather, traffic, and playability
• Effectively manage staffing, scheduling, equipment, materials, and daily maintenance operations
• Continue to build on the recent renovations and improvements at Old Waverly and Mossy Oak

• Direct the daily maintenance and agronomic operations of the assigned golf course and related grounds
• Plan, schedule, and supervise maintenance activities to consistently achieve established playing-condition standards
• Hire, train, supervise, and develop golf course maintenance staff
• Effectively schedule and route personnel and equipment to maximize productivity
• Monitor turf health and course conditions and make adjustments to agronomic programs as needed
• Manage irrigation and water management practices utilizing the Toro Osmac system
• Oversee fertilizer, pesticide, plant protectant, and other agronomic applications in accordance with applicable regulations
• Maintain accurate records related to weather, pesticide applications, maintenance practices, inventory, and other course operations
• Oversee the maintenance and use of the Club's Toro equipment fleet
• Assist with construction, renovation, and reconstruction projects, including coordination with outside contractors when necessary
• Assist with the development and management of maintenance and capital improvement budgets
• Manage purchasing, inventory, supplies, and operating expenses with an emphasis on cost control
• Frequently inspect the golf course and surrounding areas to evaluate conditions and identify opportunities for improvement
• Work closely with the Director of Agronomy and other Club leaders to coordinate golf course operations and projects
• Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to employment, safety, environmental standards, pesticide use, and golf course operations
• Participate in continuing education through seminars, workshops, field days, trade shows, and other professional development opportunities
• Maintain a strong understanding of the game of golf and how agronomic decisions affect course setup, playability, and the member experience

• 4-7+ years of golf course maintenance experience, with consideration given to candidates at varying levels of experience
• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred
• Additional experience may be considered in lieu of formal education
• Strong knowledge of golf course agronomy and turfgrass management practices
• Experience managing or supervising a golf course maintenance team
• Understanding of golf course construction, renovation, and project management principles
• Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Thorough understanding of the game of golf and golf course playability
• Ability to obtain and maintain Mississippi pesticide applicator certification/licensure
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds
