Job Title:  Turf Equipment Technician / Mechanic – Mobile & In-Shop

Reports To: Alec Welch, Owner

Compensation:  $22.00 to $40.00 Per Hour, based on Experience

Schedule:  Monday – Friday

In-season start times may vary based on weather and client needs, typically between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Job Summary (Essential Functions):

The Turf Equipment Technician / Mechanic will diagnose, maintain, and repair a wide variety of turf and grounds maintenance equipment at the Welch Mechanical shop and at customer locations throughout the region.

This hybrid position offers significant variety. The Technician will spend time in the Norton shop performing equipment rebuilds, precision maintenance, fabrication, cutting-unit service, and more extensive repairs, while also traveling to client locations to diagnose and repair equipment in the field.

The successful candidate will be mechanically inclined, dependable, organized, customer-focused, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

Welch Mechanical is willing to train the right individual. Experienced turf equipment technicians are encouraged to apply, as are mechanically talented individuals interested in learning a highly specialized and in-demand trade.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair a wide variety of turf and grounds maintenance equipment, including diesel tractors, rotary mowers, utility vehicles, commercial mowing equipment, and related machinery.
• Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other mechanical components.
• Diagnose and repair 12-volt and 24-volt electrical systems.
• Perform major equipment repairs and overhauls at the Norton shop, including engine and hydraulic rebuilds.
• Weld, fabricate, and modify equipment and components as needed.
• Maintain and service precision cutting equipment, including reel grinding, backlapping, bedknife preparation, mower-bar adjustments, and cutting-unit setup.
• Set cutting units to manufacturer specifications and customer requirements to ensure proper performance and cut quality.
• Travel to golf courses, municipalities, parks, sports fields, and other customer locations to provide mobile diagnostic and repair services.
• Maintain accurate equipment maintenance records and service documentation.
• Prepare service logs documenting work performed, parts used, and recommended future maintenance.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at the Norton shop and within company service vehicles.
• Maintain tools, service equipment, and company vehicles in good working condition.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with golf course superintendents, municipal officials, park directors, and other customers regarding equipment condition, repair needs, anticipated timelines, and preventive maintenance recommendations.
• Represent Welch Mechanical professionally while working at customer locations.
• Follow company procedures and all applicable safety requirements.

Qualifications:

• Three to five years of mechanical experience is preferred; however, Welch Mechanical is willing to train a motivated candidate with strong mechanical aptitude.
• Experience in automotive, diesel, small-engine, turf equipment, landscape equipment, agricultural equipment, or similar mechanical fields is desirable.
• General understanding of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.
• Basic knowledge of hydraulic systems and hydraulic diagnostics.
• Basic knowledge of electrical systems and electrical troubleshooting.
• Experience maintaining and repairing turf equipment is preferred but not required.
• Experience with reel mowers, cutting-unit setup, reel grinding, bedknife grinding, and sharpening techniques is highly desirable.
• Welding and fabrication experience is desirable.
• Ability to read and understand equipment service manuals, technical specifications, diagrams, and maintenance schedules.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently while traveling to customer locations and collaboratively while working in the shop.
• Strong work ethic, reliability, adaptability, and willingness to learn.
• Strong interpersonal and customer-service skills.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Ability to obtain a DOT medical card.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to work indoors in a shop environment and outdoors in varying New England weather conditions.
• Ability and willingness to work early-morning schedules during the golf and grounds-maintenance season.
