Job Details
Hamilton Farm Golf Club, in Gladstone, New Jersey, is seeking a golf course maintenance intern for the 2027 season.
This internship is built for a turfgrass student who wants to spend a season learning how a top-tier golf course is maintained. No prior golf course experience is required. Our goal is to provide an intern with the hands-on experience, agronomic understanding, and mentorship necessary to return to school with a clear picture of the profession and to move into an assistant superintendent role when the time comes.
Hamilton Farm is a 36-hole private club set on the historic Brady estate in the Somerset Hills. The Highlands, a Hurdzan/Fry championship layout playing over seven thousand yards, features rugged bunkering with high sand flashing, while the Hickory is a full eighteen-hole, USGA-rated par 3 course. Together with the practice facilities, they present thirty-nine greens across terrain that runs through mature hardwood forest, past ponds and wetlands, and over ravines and open highlands, where shade, drainage, and microclimate variation demand decisions that change hole to hole.
The intern will work directly alongside the Golf Course Superintendent and three assistant superintendents, under the Director of Grounds, within a department that totals thirty-six at the height of the season. It is not our intent to assign an intern to a single task for the length of the season. Responsibilities will broaden as skills develop, and an intern who demonstrates capability will have the opportunity to lead small crews and take ownership of a project or program area before the season is out.
Over the course of the season, the intern will be exposed to and become proficient in:
- Daily maintenance operations and golf course setup
- Turfgrass identification, scouting, and disease and pest monitoring
- Hand watering and water management
- Irrigation operation, troubleshooting, and repair
- Pesticide and fertilizer applications, including calibration
- Putting green, bunker, and tee maintenance practices
- Equipment operation and daily setup procedures
- Tournament preparation
- In-house construction and renovation projects
- Crew leadership as experience is earned
In-house project work continues through the shoulder seasons at Hamilton Farm, including drainage installation, irrigation system improvements, and tree removal and canopy management. These projects are performed by our own staff rather than contracted out, which gives an intern exposure to the construction, installation, and troubleshooting side of the profession that is difficult to acquire any other way and that most internships do not offer.

It should be noted that a private, invitation-only membership allows us to produce conditions of the highest quality without the volume of play that drives many operations, and we make deliberate use of that advantage. Long hours are part of this profession, and an intern should expect early mornings and weekend work, but we do not believe a season in this industry needs to be an endurance test, and we schedule accordingly. On-site housing is available for the duration of the internship, which we know matters a great deal to a student relocating for a season.
An internship here is treated as the first step of a career rather than as seasonal labor. Our intent is that an intern leaves Hamilton Farm having done real work, understood why it was done, and built a relationship with a management team that will support them well beyond the end of the season. Interns who perform well are strong candidates for future assistant superintendent openings at Hamilton Farm.
Job Requirements
• Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as the season requires.
• A pesticide applicator license is not required; we will support an intern who wishes to pursue one.
Salary Range
$21 per hour
