Deerfield Golf Club, located in Newark, Delaware, is seeking a motivated and dependable Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our agronomy team.

We are looking for someone who wants to be actively involved in the operation. The successful candidate will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent in maintaining and improving course conditions, leading the maintenance team, coordinating daily work, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that projects and assignments are carried through to completion.

This position is ideal for someone who is curious, accountable, comfortable making decisions in the field, and eager to continue learning the agronomic and leadership sides of golf course management.

Essential Duties

  • Works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent in the daily planning, organization, and execution of golf course maintenance operations.
  • Supervises and works alongside maintenance team members in the completion of daily assignments.
  • Assists with the maintenance and cultural practices of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and other maintained areas.
  • Assists with irrigation operation, troubleshooting, repair, and water management.
  • Participates in fertilizer and plant-protectant applications and ensures applications are completed safely and accurately.
  • Monitors course conditions throughout the day and communicates emerging issues or changing priorities to the Superintendent.
  • Assists with planning and execution of aerification, overseeding, renovation, construction, drainage, and other course-improvement projects.
  • Helps train employees on proper procedures, equipment operation, safety practices, and quality expectations.
  • Ensures equipment and resources are used appropriately and communicates equipment or maintenance concerns.
  • Assists with inventory, purchasing, recordkeeping, budgeting, payroll, invoice coding, and other administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Helps ensure compliance with company policies and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Supports snow and winter-weather operations as necessary.
  • Assumes additional operational responsibility during the Superintendent's absence.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance and incorporates safe work practices into all job duties.

Education/Experience:

Bachelors degree, Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from four or two-year college or technical school; three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Degree preference in agronomy/ horticulture/ plant/soil science).

Physical Demands:

Regularly stands, walks and sits. Regularly uses hands, reaches with arms and hands, talks or hears. Occasionally climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, tastes or smells. Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds.

Environment/Noise:

Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, fumes and/or airborne particles. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Noise level is moderate.

Certificates/Licenses:

Valid Driver’s License, Pesticide Application License

Job Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Preferences:

  • Ability to read and speak English is required in order to perform the duties of the job (e.g. the associates are required to communicate with English speaking customers or co-workers, the manuals for the equipment the associates may use are in English).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
