Palmetto Hall Golf & Country Club, a Heritage Golf Group property located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is seeking a motivated and career-driven Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our agronomy team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring golf course management professional who wants to expand their agronomic and leadership experience while working at a premier golf property in one of the country’s most recognized golf destinations. The successful candidate will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and will have meaningful involvement in daily course conditioning, staff leadership, agronomic programs, irrigation management, project execution, and long-term course planning.

At Palmetto Hall, the Assistant Superintendent will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the unique agronomic environment of the South Carolina Lowcountry while helping maintain and improve a highly visible golf facility on Hilton Head Island.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent works directly with the Golf Course Superintendent to manage and maintain the golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse grounds, landscaping, equipment, and related golf course assets.
The Assistant Superintendent will play an active leadership role in implementing the club’s agronomic programs and maintaining consistently high-quality playing conditions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with the daily management and conditioning of the golf course and surrounding grounds.
• Help schedule, train, supervise, motivate, and evaluate golf course maintenance team members.
• Participate in the implementation of turfgrass management programs, including mowing, cultivation, fertility, plant protectant applications, irrigation, and course setup.
• Regularly inspect course conditions and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Assist with irrigation system operation, troubleshooting, repair, water management, and monitoring of the pump station.
• Oversee and participate in fertilizer and plant protectant applications in accordance with applicable regulations and established agronomic programs.
• Help maintain accurate records related to maintenance activities, chemical and fertilizer applications, labor, and other departmental operations.
• Work with the Superintendent to develop and execute short- and long-range plans for the golf course.
• Assist in maintaining clean, organized, safe, and professional maintenance facilities, including chemical, irrigation, equipment, and parts storage areas.
• Support employee training and professional development, including equipment operation, safety procedures, chemical handling, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Help ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to golf course maintenance operations, chemicals, petroleum products, and workplace safety.
• Coordinate course maintenance activities with the golf operation to minimize disruption to member and guest play.
• Assist with special projects, renovations, course improvements, and work performed by outside contractors.
• Participate in weather-related course management decisions and emergency response as needed.
• Serve as a visible leader within the agronomy department and help create a positive, accountable, team-oriented work environment.

Job Requirements
• Strong understanding of turfgrass management practices and golf course conditioning standards.
• Working knowledge of irrigation systems, fertility programs, plant protectants, equipment operation, and course setup.
• Ability to lead, train, and motivate employees while working effectively as part of a team.
• Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform the physical requirements associated with golf course maintenance.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Pesticide applicator license/certification preferred or ability to obtain within the required timeframe.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone with the desire and ability to grow into greater responsibility within Palmetto Hall and Heritage Golf Group.
Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture or Plant Science is preferred.
An Associate’s degree from an intensive two-year turf grass management program.
Golf Course Superintendent Association of America (GCSAA)
Pesticide Application certification.
Valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme
heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
to loud.
Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is
typical of this position.
Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.
Salary Range
From $65,000 to $70,000 per year
