Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Compensation: Approximately $80,000, commensurate with experience
Shackamaxon Country Club is seeking a motivated and experienced Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our golf course maintenance team.
Located in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, Shackamaxon is a beautiful and historic A.W. Tillinghast-designed golf course and one of the region’s premier private clubs. This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring golf course superintendent to gain meaningful leadership experience while helping maintain and enhance a classic golf course in a high-quality private club environment.
The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and will play an integral role in the daily management of the golf course, grounds, maintenance programs and team. The successful candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented and committed to providing outstanding playing conditions for our Members and guests.
Key Responsibilities

Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with the daily management and maintenance of the golf course, clubhouse grounds, landscaping and related property.

Help implement the Club’s overall turf management and golf course maintenance programs.

Schedule, train, supervise and evaluate golf course maintenance employees.

Supervise and participate in the planting, fertilization, care and maintenance of turf, trees, shrubs and other landscape areas.

Monitor course conditions daily and identify opportunities for improvement.

Assist with irrigation system operation, troubleshooting and repairs.

Oversee fertilizer and nutrient applications and ensure proper documentation.

Maintain accurate maintenance, personnel and application records.

Help ensure the maintenance facility, chemical storage areas, irrigation areas and equipment areas are clean, organized and operated safely.

Work with the Superintendent to develop short- and long-range plans for the golf course.

Support and enforce the Club’s safety program and ensure chemicals and other controlled products are properly used, stored and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.

Communicate effectively with the golf operation regarding daily course activities, maintenance schedules and playing conditions.

Assist with landscaping and maintenance of areas surrounding the clubhouse and other Club facilities.

Help coordinate projects and work performed by outside contractors.

Participate in employee development and training, including equipment operation, workplace safety and proper handling of fertilizers and chemicals.

Serve as a visible, engaged leader who works alongside the team and helps create a positive, accountable work environment.

Job Requirements
Previous supervisory experience in a golf course or private club environment.
Strong working knowledge of turfgrass management practices, irrigation, fertilizer and chemical applications, and golf course maintenance equipment.
Ability to lead and develop employees while working effectively as part of a team.
Strong problem-solving, organizational and communication skills.
Working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations related to golf course operations.
New Jersey pesticide applicator certification, or the ability to obtain the appropriate certification.
Valid driver’s license.
GCSAA membership and continued professional development are encouraged.
An appreciation for the game of golf and the standards expected at a premier private club is preferred.
Salary Range
From $80,000 to $85,000 per year
