Position Overview
Southern Hills Plantation Club is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Golf Course Superintendent to lead all golf course maintenance and grounds operations.
The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for maintaining the golf course in exceptional playing condition while managing the club’s turf-care programs, landscaping, equipment, irrigation systems, budgets, personnel, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader with strong agronomic knowledge, sound administrative skills, and the ability to develop both short- and long-term plans for the property.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the golf course, clubhouse grounds, landscaping, open spaces, and related maintenance equipment.
- Develop and implement comprehensive golf course maintenance programs.
- Prepare and manage the department’s annual operating and capital budgets.
- Recruit, schedule, train, supervise, and evaluate golf course maintenance personnel.
- Maintain accurate departmental personnel, maintenance, chemical-application, and equipment records.
- Direct the planting, fertilization, cultivation, care, and removal of turf, trees, shrubs, and other plant materials.
- Inspect the golf course regularly and recommend improvements that enhance playing conditions and property appearance.
- Establish short- and long-range plans for course maintenance, renovation, construction, and capital improvements.
- Develop, operate, and maintain drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.
- Oversee the equipment repair shop and ensure that all grounds-maintenance equipment is properly maintained.
- Ensure fertilizers, pesticides, petroleum products, and other controlled materials are used, stored, documented, and disposed of in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Implement and enforce a comprehensive safety program, including hazard communication and employee training.
- Coordinate work performed by outside contractors.
- Communicate regularly with the Director of Golf, Golf Professional, management, and applicable committees regarding course conditions, maintenance activities, scheduled events, and operational needs.
- Keep members informed about current and upcoming maintenance activities.
- Recommend capital improvements and equipment purchases.
- Determine when weather or course conditions require restrictions or closure to prevent damage.
- Perform other appropriate duties assigned by the General Manager.
Leadership Responsibilities
This position supervises the Golf Course Maintenance Foreman, HOA Amenities Supervisor, Pesticide Application Specialist, Irrigation Specialist, Equipment Operators, Equipment Mechanic, groundskeepers, and other assigned maintenance personnel.
Job Benefits
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant science, or a related discipline; or an associate’s degree from an intensive two-year turfgrass management program.
Previous experience as an assistant to an experienced Golf Course Superintendent.
Previous supervisory experience in a golf course or private-club environment.
Strong knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation, drainage, fertilization, pesticide application, landscaping, equipment maintenance, and course-conditioning practices.
Demonstrated budgeting, planning, problem-solving, decision-making, and personnel-management abilities.
Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting golf course operations.
Basic understanding of the Rules of Golf.
Ability to respond effectively during operational or property emergencies.
Licenses and Certifications
GCSAA Class A membership or certification.
Current pesticide applicator certification.
Valid driver’s license.
The position requires frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling. Work is regularly performed outdoors and around moving mechanical equipment. The Superintendent may be exposed to heat, humidity, wet conditions, airborne particles, chemicals, vibration, electrical hazards, and moderate-to-loud noise. Candidates must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position safely and effectively.
