Job Appointment: Full-time, Regular.
Work Schedule: Friday- Tuesday, 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM (6:00 AM – 2:30 PM October – April).

Work Location: This position reports to Heron Lakes Golf Course at 3500 N. Victory Blvd. Portland, OR 97217.

Position Summary:

This is an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent position.  Portland Parks and Recreation is seeking a skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Golf Course Lead Greenskeeper. In this role, you will provide specialized care to golf course greens, grounds, and facilities while also serving as a lead to assigned workers. Your knowledge of golf course maintenance and leadership abilities will be crucial in ensuring the playability and overall maintenance of our courses.

What You’ll Do:

  •  Utilize specialized knowledge of golf course operations to support the supervisor in ensuring the playability of assigned courses.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate work activities, including determining resource needs and directing the work of the crew.
  • Review the work of assigned staff, provide training, and offer guidance to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Perform computer-related tasks such as timekeeping, record-keeping, and procurement.
  • Hand water, monitor moisture levels, troubleshoot irrigation malfunctions, and manage irrigation scheduling.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the irrigation system.
  • Set up the golf course (change hole and tee locations).
  • Manage teams for bunker maintenance and restoration projects.
  • Mow all heights of cut on the golf course and roll greens, as needed.
  • Identify turfgrass diseases.
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and sand topdressing.
  • Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of the superintendent.

Applicants must demonstrate how their education, training, and experience meet each of the minimum qualifications listed below:

  1.  Experience performing all golf course maintenance tasks that ensure daily playability (including water management, bunker maintenance, and golf course setup)
  2. Experience safely and effectively applying fertilizers and pesticides.
  3. Experience training staff, assigning work, reviewing work quality, and providing guidance to ensure maintenance standards are met.
  4. Experience troubleshooting, installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation components.
  5. Ability to work constructively within a team environment and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Applicants must also possess:

  • A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record

What to Expect

  2. Notice/Feedback - (Week of August 3): You will receive an email when the minimum qualification review is complete. If you disagree with the evaluation results, you may request a review within 14 days of the email notice, per City Administrative Rule 3.01.
  3. Selection Process - (Late August): The hiring bureau will review qualified applications, conduct interviews, and check references. 
  4. Conditional Job Offer - (September): Final candidates may undergo a background or driving record check, depending on the position.
