About Caves Valley Golf Club

Caves Valley Golf Club is a private golf club located in Owings Mills, Maryland, just outside Baltimore. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1991, Caves Valley has established itself as one of the premier golf venues in the Mid-Atlantic and has developed a long history of championship golf.

Since opening, Caves Valley has hosted numerous significant amateur and professional championships, including the U.S. Mid-Amateur, NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship, LPGA International Crown, Senior Players Championship, and two BMW Championships.

The Club entered a new chapter following the 2021 BMW Championship, when Patrick Cantlay defeated Bryson DeChambeau in a memorable six-hole playoff.

Following the championship, Caves Valley undertook an extensive renovation in 2023 led by Tom Fazio and the Club's team. The project represented a complete rethinking of both the golf course and its agronomic infrastructure.

The renovated Caves Valley was showcased on the world stage during the 2025 BMW Championship, won by Scottie Scheffler.

The result is a modern championship golf course that provides an exceptional environment for someone pursuing a career in golf course management.

The Internship

Our goal is simple:

We want interns to leave Caves Valley significantly more prepared for the next step in their careers than when they arrived.

The 2027 Caves Valley internship is designed to be an all-encompassing agronomic and leadership experience, not simply a summer maintenance position.

Interns will become part of the Golf Course Maintenance team and participate directly in the daily preparation and management of the golf course. They will work alongside the Superintendent, Assistants, Equipment Management team, Irrigation team and experienced staff while gaining exposure to the decisions that drive championship-level golf course conditioning.

Interns will be challenged, given responsibility and exposed to both the technical and leadership sides of the profession.

Daily Agronomic Experience

Throughout the summer, interns will gain hands-on experience with areas including:

• Course setup and daily championship-level conditioning
• Greens, approaches, tees and fairway management
• Mowing and rolling practices
• Moisture management and hand watering
• TDR moisture-meter use and data-driven water management
• Irrigation operation, troubleshooting and repair
• Fertilizer and plant protectant applications
• Sprayer and spreader calibration
• Plant growth regulator programs
• Disease, insect and weed identification
• Cultivation and aerification practices
• Topdressing and sand incorporation
• Turf establishment, seeding and sod work
• Tournament preparation
• Equipment setup and maintenance
• Crew organization and daily operations

Interns will not simply observe these practices. They will participate in them.

Dedicated Development Weeks

A major component separating the Caves Valley internship from a traditional summer internship is our series of dedicated development weeks.

Each intern will rotate through focused experiences designed to provide exposure to areas of golf course management that young professionals may not normally experience during a single internship.

Irrigation Week

The intern will work directly with our irrigation operation and gain a deeper understanding of the systems responsible for managing water across the property.

Experience may include irrigation troubleshooting and repair, head adjustment, electrical diagnostics, pump station operation, central control, water management strategy and understanding how irrigation decisions affect both plant health and playing conditions.

Equipment Management Week

Interns will spend dedicated time with our Equipment Management team learning the systems behind a successful maintenance operation.

Rather than simply seeing equipment enter and leave the shop, interns will gain exposure to reel setup, quality-of-cut evaluation, grinding, preventative maintenance, equipment troubleshooting and the relationship between equipment setup and playing conditions.

Scheduling & Leadership Week

One of the most difficult transitions for a young turf professional is moving from completing assignments to organizing people and operations.

During Scheduling Week, interns will gain exposure to the process behind planning a golf course maintenance operation, including daily assignments, labor allocation, course priorities, weather considerations and communication.

The objective is to begin developing the decision-making skills necessary to eventually become an Assistant Superintendent and Golf Course Superintendent.

Championship Tournament Experience

Every intern in the program will have the opportunity to gain experience outside Caves Valley at a major championship or professional tournament operation.

Rather than spending the entire summer seeing golf course management through the lens of one property, we want interns to experience another successful operation, build relationships with professionals throughout the industry and see firsthand how another agronomy team prepares for championship golf.

Tournament assignments will be coordinated individually as part of the internship program.

These experiences are intended to provide more than tournament preparation. They give interns an opportunity to expand their professional network and experience different management styles, agronomic programs and golf course operations.

More Than a Summer Job

Caves Valley is looking for interns who want to build careers in golf course management.

We recognize that an internship should be mutually beneficial. We expect our interns to work hard and contribute to the success of the operation, but in return, our responsibility is to teach, challenge and invest in them.

Interns will have opportunities throughout the summer to ask questions, participate in agronomic discussions, understand why decisions are being made and develop relationships with members of our management team.

Our objective is not for an intern to finish the summer simply knowing how Caves Valley operates.

Our objective is for them to understand why we operate the way we do and to take those experiences with them throughout their careers.

Students currently enrolled in two-year, four-year or certificate turfgrass programs are encouraged to apply.
