Assistant Superintendent/ Assistant In Training
Job Details
Karsten Golf Club
Karsten Golf Club’s agronomy team supports Cowboy and Cowgirl Golf, member play, and daily course preparation across an approximately 1,400-acre property. The golf course includes 96 acres of Tahoma 31 fairways, 4.59 acres of 007XL/7-7-7 bentgrass greens in a sand-based rootzone with 5% soil, and 4.5 acres of RTF tall fescue alongside extensive native areas.
Since the renovation completed in 2025, we have continued working to improve conditions and strengthen the programs, equipment, and infrastructure behind them. We take pride in mentoring and developing people. We work alongside our team, explain the reasons behind decisions, and give individuals more responsibility as their skills grow. We expect people in leadership positions to carry that learning forward by supporting and developing others.
Our work uses GPS-guided sprayers, Rain Bird irrigation controls, field measurements, mapping, agronomic records, and USGA Deacon. Those tools help us make decisions, alongside observation, research, and discussion with our consultants.
The Position
We are looking for the right candidate to strengthen our program and help develop the people around them. Depending on the candidate’s experience and leadership ability, the role may focus on spray operations, carry broader Assistant in Training responsibilities, or include both. Overall scope of the position will reflect where the person can contribute most, but not limited to certain duties.
We consider this an intermediate management position. The person in this role will set clear expectations, coach employees, and stay engaged with the quality of the work. Our leadership team shares responsibility and adjusts daily to support the crew and the turf. Good communication, sound judgment, and steady follow-through matter here.
Mentoring is part of the daily work. We talk through what we are seeing, why an application or practice is being considered, and what we will look for afterward. Product evaluation and discussion of different chemistries are part of the program. The person in this position will take part in those conversations and help others understand the work.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Superintendent to plan applications; calculate, mix, and apply products safely, calibrate equipment, and keep records current.
- Check sprayer function and application quality, maintain product inventory, and keep the mixing and loading areas orderly.
- Organize the application crew, explain standards, coach employees, and follow up on completed work.
- Walk the course, note turf conditions and response, and share observations that may affect application timing or the agronomic program.
- Help forecast product needs, prepare for the season, and evaluate how applications perform.
- For an Assistant in Training assignment, develop broader experience in daily course operations, irrigation, crew leadership, projects, and planning.
