SUMMARY
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Crossroads Golf Course Superintendent. Under the Superintendent’s supervision, the Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in the management of the golf course greens, tees, fairways, natural areas, daily set up, staff, culture, etc. The Assistant Superintendent helps plan and prioritize work schedules, maintains accurate records, trains, coaches staff, and communicates well within the golf management department, members, and club.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Job duties include, although are not limited to:
- Assists in planning and supervising of the management of all golf course related areas. (greens, tees, fairways, native edges, daily course set up, etc.)
- Develop, train, and supervise staff to perform all related golf course management functions and use of the equipment to meet, maintain, and elevate our standards.
- In year one, supporting grow-in of golf course, bunker installation, root zone mix preparation, native area establishment, irrigation and drainage installation, vegetating lagoon banks, building a team and culture, and development of maintenance facilities.
- The primary responsibilities of year two are the maturation of the Nine Hole Course to exceed the vision of South Street Partners and King Collins.
- Supervises and participates in the operation and management of pump, irrigation, and drainage systems.
- Scouts the golf course for potential problems (disease, insects, weeds, irrigation, routing, mowing, playability, etc.) and reports findings to the golf course superintendent.
- Maintains weather and environmental records.
- Writes daily schedule and reviews weekly schedule with superintendent for changes or updates.
- Supervises and/or operates pesticide/fertilizer applications and calibration of equipment.
- Assist in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
- Assist in management of budget, organization of shop, building culture, and maintaining inventory.
- Participates in weekly management meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy/plant/soil sciences desired, or equivalent knowledge, which may include an associate degree in Turfgrass Science offered by some universities prefered
- Requires current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator, or ability to obtain certification within 90 days
- Familiarity with and knowledge of the game of golf
- Working knowledge of:
- Construction, turf establishment, and cultural practices employed on golf course putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
- Planting and culture of turfgrass used on golf courses.
- Proper use of fertilizers and soil conditioners
- Pest diagnosis and control methods, including materials.
- Drainage systems
- Watering practices and irrigation systems
- Equipment operation, service, and repair
- Computer applications and operation
- Ability to schedule and supervise work to achieve the most efficient use of employees and resources.
- Effectively communicate with all staff, members, vendors, architects, owners, consultants, and fellow professionals
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Majority of tasks are performed outdoors in variable weather conditions, including hot, cold, windy, and rainy. Temperatures can be extreme but are usually moderate. Frequently works near moving/mechanical parts. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to reach with arms and hands, bend, and stoop, remain at post standing for periods of time, walk for a long distance, and is required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color and peripheral. Due to the busy nature of the position the associate must be able to routinely work well under pressure, remain calm, and be tactful with co-workers.
